You have to be old...

Seen this on another forum and thought it was pretty funny.
------------------------------------------------------------

You have to be old enough to remember Abbott and Costello, and too old to
REALLY understand computers, to fully appreciate this. For those of us who
sometimes get flustered by our computers, please read
on...

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous sketch,
'Who's on First?' might have turned out something like this:

COSTELLO CALLS TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM ABBOTT

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can
I help you?

COSTELLO: Thanks I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm
thinking about buying a computer.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.

ABBOTT: Your computer?

COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.

ABBOTT: What about Windows?

COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?

ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?

COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look at the
windows?

ABBOTT: Wallpaper.

COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and
software.

ABBOTT: Software for Windows?

COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to
write proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do
you
have?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?

ABBOTT: I just did.

COSTELLO: You just did what?

ABBOTT: Recommend something.

COSTELLO: You recommended something?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: For my office?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!

ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.

COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let's
just say I'm sitting at my computer and I want to type a
proposal.
What do I need?

ABBOTT: Word.

COSTELLO: What word?

ABBOTT: Word in Office.

COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.

ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?

ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue 'W'.

COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue 'w' if you don't
start
with some straight answers. What about financial
bookkeeping? You
have anything I can track my money with?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?

ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.

COSTELLO: What's bundled with my computer?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?

ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.

COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How
much?

ABBOTT: One copy.

COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?

ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.

COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?

ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!

(A few days later)

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?

ABBOTT: Click on
'START'..............

Hi there, my PC is pretty old (2006) and I'd like to upgrade it once so I can run Win 7 and play last year's games. What do you recommend for $200 all up?

My opinion: I can get a better socket 939 CPU and maybe upgrade the video card, or I can buy a whole new MoBo+CPU+Fan that takes the same RAM. Either way I can probably get by with my power supply, case and all the rest. Recommendations?

My home built computer has had Win XP Pro on it since the beginning. Here is what I have in the comp...

-Lian Li PC61B case
-Corsair HX520W power supply
-Asus P5K-E WiFi-AP edition
-Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 processor
*I have an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 proc that I just acquired...thinking about replacing
the E6750 with this...and yes, I know I would be going from a 1333 FSB to a
1066FSB ... any other downsides to this decision?
-Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro
-Mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 memory
-XFX GeForce 8600GTS - 256MB DDR3 video card
*I have a VisionTex HD4870 - 512MB DDR5 video card paired with an Arctic Cooler
Accelero Twin VGA cooler ready to go into the system
-2 Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB drives with 32MB cache - brand new and
unused...plan to partition one of the drives and install Windows 7 Professional on it
-2 Toshiba/Samsung SH-S203 DVD writers
-Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music sound card
-Klipsch Pro Media speakers

I have a couple of questions in regard to a Windows 7 Professional (non-upgrade, full version) installation.

(1) Windows 7 upgrade advisor tells me that my GeForce 8600GTS is not powerful enough to run Aero on Win 7...will the new VisionTek HD4870 be sufficient?
(2) I have the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor. Will this be sufficient for the time being until I can afford to build an i7 machine sometime in the as yet undetermined future? Or should I try to come up with something like an Intel Core 2 Quad 9550 proc? Not sure I want to spend the money on the 9550 when I could put the money toward a modest i7 rig. I am not a gamer, but am a digital photographer and do a fair amount of picture manipulation as well as watch video on my computer.
(3) Will the Corsair 520 watt p/s be big enough wtih the above configuration or am I going to need something between a 750 and an 850 watt p/s?
(4) Will the Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro be adequate for the Q6600 (or Q9550 should I decide to go that route)?
(5) What about my sound set up...any suggestions about the Creative sound card or the Klipsch speakers?

Thanks ahead of time for anyone who answers these questions. I do like to dabble with my computer and really do want to move up to Win 7 as soon as possible. I am waiting for my copy of Win 7 to get here...otherwise I have all the parts to begin the re-configuration. Any advice???

it'd be good to see more of the front page news items and reviews being linked to corresponding discussions on the forums.

i think it'd bring more activity to the forums as well as new membership.

not like every news item would warrant a new thread, i'd imagine just the bigger news items would get a thread, but for reviews especially it'd be a good place for discussion. i know i see ryan post such discussion threads from time to time but it'd be nice to see more of them.

i often find myself reading a review or news item from the front page and expecting a link for discussion. i've seen other sites do this and i really like it, so it'd be good to see it on my preferred forums at PCPer :D

any idea if it will indeed come with a remote and ir receiver? it's be nice if the ir was built in of course, since it's so obviously geared at being an HTPC.

think about definitely getting one of these down the road. always wanted to build an HTPC but this is a much better looking solution than anything i ever had in mind.

i read in another article on the 1501 in the comments that it will come with a remote and IR receiver, so it sounds hopeful.

also is it true it will support up to 4gb of ram? if so i assume that it will come with win7 64bit, seems the 330 has 64bit instruction set.

I'm putting it through Vantage, and it's coming out ~P8200. Is this right or is there something wrong? I'm running the latest chipset drivers from Gigabyte's site, latest NVIDIA drivers. I don't have the GPU score off hand, but I believe it was in the 7500 range with the CPU score being ~32,500.

Is it because we spend "leisure time" on games we have already figured out? And a challenging new experience is no longer "leisure"?

Anyone else ever find themselves doing the same thing?

Hey guys, new here, just bought a laptop for school.
Its an LG R580, intel core 2 duo T6500, 4GB ddr2 ram, 320gb hdd, NVIDIA Geforce G105M

As of the time of this posting, HWMonitor is saying
Core 0 - 56 degrees celsius
Core 1 - 56 degrees celsius
Maximum was at 60 degrees celsius

my computer isnt under any sort of heavy loading, as of now its only been some web browsing.

I was doing some googling earlier about core 2 duo processors, it seems that alot of people idle around 45-50 degrees, some even lower.

What could be the issue here, or am I just worrying too much?

I'm trying to get a feel for like, the top 5 games right now in terms of steep system requirements. The first ones that come to mind are for instance:

Crysis Warhead
Modern Warfare 2
FEAR 2
Dragon Age: Origins

What does the list really look like? I'm looking over some GPU reviews for example, and seeing things like Arkham Asylum and a few others.

I bought this game for cheap on Xbox Live.

It's a very unique puzzle platformer. You manipulate time to progress and 'save the princess'. I've never played anything like it, except maybe Portal in regard to the crazy out of the box solutions.I know some of the guys on the forum really liked the movie Primer. Same sort of lateral thinking and ingenuity here. Loved that movie and I have similar praise for the intellectual side of Braid.

But beyond the vague almost pretentious text narrative ( which can be safely ignored, but also has some interesting theory's ) lies some really solid gameplay. It's the sort of puzzle solving that you can get if you try long enough. It really discouraged me from looking up solutions, I ended up only looked up one last piece I couldn't get for the life of me. Though, I did spend a good amount of time cleaning up the puzzle pieces I couldn't figure out on the first few runs. The platforming doesn't rely on Contra-like twitch skills, but it's still fun.

The graphics are simple, almost too cartoony but after a few minutes you notice the really awesome backgrounds and time warp effects. There's a Mario theme to the layout of the game but having a familiar basic gameplay really makes the unique time-elements come out.

Overall a very fulfilling game, perfectly balanced IMO. I recommend.

Braid on Steam
Also on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN network.

Any thoughts?
