Hi everyone,

I couldn't sort out all the info on this in the forum search; I wonder if someone could give me a step by step process for setting up my connection.

I have a ThinkPad with XP wirelessly connected to my Linksys router, with a cable modem from Charter (someone helped me set that up). I now need to set up a hardline connection from a Dell desktop with XP to the same router. I have no clue how to start!

Just so you know my skill level- I am fairly handy around my PCs, in fact I just figured out how to offload data, delete a partition, and reinstall XP on the above mentioned Dell. I am fairly versed in most PC maintenance, but am absolutely confused with router and internet connections, so please explain accordingly!

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Hi,

I'm trying to setup a NLB cluster on windows server 2008 R2.

I currently have a server with dual nics and a 100mbps router. I was planning on connecting both nics to the router to achieve a higher speed.

Currently the single nic is being overwhelmed during file transfers. For example last night I was moving 300gbs of data from one computer and trying to stream videos to another computer. Obviously the router and nic on the server were unhappy being that the file transfer alone was pushing at 85-90% of its 100mbps capability. There wasn't much overhead to stream my video.

I figure since I have two nics, I can let the OS load balance the incoming file transfer and the outgoing streamed video. It would also benefit the other files behind download via the internet.

Does anyone know how to go about setting up a NLB cluster?

I've tried fiddling with it, but I'm not sure. I know I need to assign each NIC its individual static address, then I need to create a virtual address that the clients connect/transfer to. Currently both NICs have a static address assigned by the router.

When NLB do I have both the NICs and the virtual address statically set on the router? I can't seem to set a static address without a mac, and I don't see how a virtual address has a MAC.

Also what roles do I have to install?

Thanks

Info: Im on several laptops all are not on at once. Im running windows 7 evaluation build. I have the network meter gadgets that allow me to see whats happening on my network. I have comcast cable internet and I think its the highest or second highest connection speed. Yes I do game If this matters, Only on live tho.

So I went to Speedtest.net and everything looks good there. But I time out on live some times. Also my downloads are slow. And they are set to go fast. I set the settings myself (Torrent) and they have worked just fine till I noticed my spiking.

Here is my speed test

Here is a pic of the spiking

What the heck is going on with my connection? Could this be a virus or something? I keep my computer clean vary vary clean. Oh and I have wireless going to my laptops. secure connection. Computer is not bogged down with add and spyware. Thanks.

Hello. I have used Norton products since 2000. They have finally gotten to bloated for me, so I switched to Avira when I installed Windows 7 64bit. It is working fine for me, but what about norton system tools like WinDoctor? I've always felt that it's maintenance programs kept my system running smooth. Maybe i'm just nieve. Is there some good downloads out there to take the place of some of these utilities? I'm a little hesitant when it comes to downloading and installing programs that claim to "speed up your PC". Thanks.

I recently installed "Malwarebytes/Antimalware" along side of AVGFree 9 and Spybot S&D.
On my computer it picked up a rogue installer in documents & settings, on a friends rig it found the Sasfis trojan.
His computer is what brought us to install Mbam because he had a message saying runtimedll error file not found each time he rebooted. He had updated avg and spybot but neither found anything.
I thought maybe one or the other had picked up that file in a heuristic scan and deleted it but not the rest of the files in the registry.
I did a google search for that file (ifmg.kqo) and found that mbam had it classified as the "sasfis trojan".

I guess I am wondering if AVG or Spybot have gone downhill lately. I have used both for a few years.

Any comments or alternatives out there ?

So my Father recently purchased a Netcore 802.11 b/g/n router and the corresponding 802.11n network card. Everything was fine and dandy for about a week, internet was fast, it dropped on occasion but it wasn't too big a deal. All of a sudden 2 command prompt windows pop up and the computer shuts off. I figured it was just a hiccup that my otherwise great computer had... Wrong! i have now lost all ability to connect to the internet be it wireless, wired to the router or wired to the modem (dsl is it helps). When i open my browser it says cannot connect to internet check proxy or firewall settings, so i turned on the firewall, nothing. Turned off the firewall, nothing. The computer recognizes all the connections I had mentioned before but i have no internet. My ps3 and my laptop and my other pc work fine but my Gaming and media rig which i actually need the internet on is down. My OS is windows xp service pack 2 if it helps. I have since removed the wireless card.

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8500. its hooked up via ethernet cable. it actually shares a connection with my computer via a hub. (house was prewired and there is only one jack in the room.. so i used a 5 port hub to allow the printer and computer to be hooked up)

Should this printer be plugged into its on port on the router rather than sharing the same port... via networking hub to stop conflict?

Since the printer has been hooked up, my internet has been acting real wacky on the computer that it shares the hub with. I was wondering if they shared the same IP address or something. I initially didnt think that they would affect each other, but it seems as if they might.

Thanks for any help in advance?

okay, after the upgrade, my onboard realtek lan quite working. ..i have a dlink pci card installed, so i hooked up to that and it works...well , tonight i went into the device manager and found out my realtek onboard lan was not able to start, code 10 error...i was thinking, well, maybe a bios upgrade, and yes , there was one..did that, still would not start. i also downloaded the realtek drivers from the gig site, still onboard lan not working..

the last effort i made, and my final thought on this problem , went to realtek site and downloaded the windows 7 64 bit driver, it installed successfully, and went to device manager, bingo, it stated it was working properly, hooked my rj--45 cable to the realtek port, and it works...thought i would pass this along for those that might have the same problem.

How to isolate two groups of people sharing one internet connection?

Ok, so I have a single internet connection that comes into a router. That router is then used by a certain group of people to get on the internet. What I then want to do is take an ethernet cable from that router to some other device (router/firewall, whatever) that will then provide internet to a second group of people. The issue that I need to solve is that I want to make sure there is some type of complete isolation between the two groups of people. Mainly, I don't want any computers on the first main router to be able to see or access any devices on the second router/device. Also, I cannot change anything that has to do with the first main router. I need a hardware solution, simply turning off or passwording file sharing on the computers will not do what I need.

I am sure I can make it work fine with the right options in the right router or hardware firewall but I am not sure what I need. A second internet connection is out of the question. I have a spare D-link DIR-615 router that I daisy chained off the first main router (ethernet cable from a port on first main router to WAN port on DIR-615) and I can get internet to come out of the DIR-615 to the second group of people, but there is no type of wall between the two groups of people on the two different routers. People on the first router can see people on the second router and vice-versa, that is what I am trying to eliminate. Maybe the DIR-615 can be configured to separate its users from the users on the first router that are coming in through the WAN port? I know the DIR-615 has a ton of settings/options but I have know idea what one to use that would make this work. If the DIR-615 won't work, what other device could I use and how do I configure it properly? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I am sure there is a simple/cheap solution. Thanks so much guys!

At home I use my desktop computer for work and school. But now I want to start using my laptop at a public hot spot or two: coffee shops, the library, the airport, McDonald's, etc. That means I'll be going on the Internet via wi-fi on a regular basis...and exposing myself to hackers. You know that wi-fi is super unsecure, very unsecure. Figuratively speaking, a round of Russian Roulette is a safer sport than surfing wirelessly. I understand that when it comes to safe surfing a VPN (virtual private network) is the first thing a security minded person should have on their laptop.
a) Is that true?
b) If so, can you recommend the name of a good VPN?
c) will the VPN slow down my surf sessions compared to the hard wired connection I use at home?
d) one person said that a VPN is NOT the way to go. Check this out: he said that all I need is a good firewall and a good anti-virus protection program when I go wireless in public. That sounds a little nuts. Does that sound crazy? That sounds like a prescription for a virtual suicide. Of course I have both already in place, but is that to say that that's all you need to guard against packet sniffers when you're wireless in public - a firewall and an anti-virus progam? Sounds kinda incomplete to me. Do you agree or disagree with his statement?
