Where are the lowend 939's??
I want to go A64 but I cant see spending $500+ for the lowest end 939 pin CPU. of course I could go 754 but how long does that platform have left? I want to see some 2800+ 939's and higher the 3500+ is the lowest I can find and the price isnt worth it. anyone know of any future lowend Chips from amd for the 939's? and no no the Semprons either a true Athlon is what I am looking for.

Re: Where are the lowend 939's??
I'm in a similar position, don't want to waste money on a 754 if its going to be dropped in the medium term.
I believe some lower rated 939 parts are pencilled in for release in Q3 '04, although I don't believe they intend to go that low with them (i.e. you'll probably never see a 2800 or 3000 A64 for 939). Still, hopefully they'll come in at a better price than what is currently available for 939. |
Re: Where are the lowend 939's??
What, you guys hold on to motherboards 2 years? I know I upgrade yearly.
With the limited K8 production, AMD will be putting the best stuff on 939, with the slower parts on 754. Why? Money. Profit. I figure when the next round of stuff comes out, the 3500 will settle in the $250 range in a few months. In order for prices to come down, supply must meet demand. It isn't. Yet. |
Re: Where are the lowend 939's??
Yup, about every couple of years and I tend to buy in the mid-range (i.e. pay up to £200-£230 tops for a CPU and will never buy the bleeding edge GPU's). To be honest my kit is only just starting to flag speed-wise now (XP2400 on an A7N8X Dlx). I was considering going up to a higher speed XP given the excellent current prices to eek out a few more months but reckon i'll wait it out for a decent 939 for the moment.

Re: Where are the lowend 939's??
low end 939 is a oxy-moron. the 939 is ment to be the flagship line for AMD, and one must pay for the performance of AMD's best...

Re: Where are the lowend 939's??
look up reviews..not worth it..get a good sk 754 board,mated to a 3000+ and o/c that sucker to 2.5(+) gigs,compare to fx and report back :)

Re: Where are the lowend 939's??
honestly, i think if you get the socket 754 right now, grab a 3200 or 3000+ you will have enough options for upgrading for the next year or two. if you really want to upgrade, the 3700+ will probably have come down in price, im sure they'll still have them around by then

Grab a 754 socket board & CPU and O/C it :) I'm about to do that myself. 939 is a waste of money right now. |
Re: Where are the lowend 939's??
Oh I agree entirely that 939 is purely for the 'money no object' set at the moment and represents poor value for money. I think just alot of folk are fearful of shelling out for 754 now and having a wholly obselete mobo in 12 months.
I really think AMD need to clear things up as quite frankly the current situation of confusion is hurting sales for sure. If i'd not already read quite a few bits of commentary that 939 was the only socket with a long term future then I might've already stumped up for a 754 by now. I suppose they may want to leave the waters murky for a bit to shift existing 754 inventory whilst 939 gains a foothold, but its offputting for sure if you're like me and don't necessarily upgrade annually and like your mobos to last for a couple of CPU's worth of upgrades if at all possible. Add into this the situation with PCI-E and it gets even more uncertain. Even if 754 has a long term future, you could buy a 754 mobo today and possibly find yourself having to replace it anyway in 2 years because all the decent graphics cards may well be PCI-E by then (remember how PCI was phased out for new graphics cards at all but the budget end quite quickly when AGP came on the scene). So in the meanwhile i'll have to continue to ignore that pile of money burning a hole in my pocket  |
Re: Where are the lowend 939's??
I agree with the above posts. get a Socket 754 Athlon 64 3000+ and overclock it up to 2.5GHz. You'll easily be able to compete with the best Socket 939 has to offer, the 3800+ or even the FX-53. I could get a 3700+ for my system, but I don't want to bother. ANY Athlon 64 will give you great performance. The Socket 939 parts are WAAAAY too expensive to justify the cost. I'd wait until you get to the 4000+ before considering one.

Re: Where are the lowend 939's??
I've never understood the fear of having an obsolete mobo... they are cheaper than just about any other major component. This year I have had 3 different CPUs and 7 differnt motherbaords... I just sell the old one for as much as I can get for it and buy a new board. Only twice in my life have I gotten a new CPU without getting a new motherboard. I useually go through 2-3 boards per cpu.
I see no problem with AMDs current line-up, I do not find it confusing in the least. People should do some research and acctually know what they are buying before they buy it. I can't blame AMD for offering options, even if they are beyond my price range. |
Re: Where are the lowend 939's??
7 mobos in a year? Thats going some  My other half would kill me if I bought half that many in a year!
Must admit it'd be nice if I could do it but i've got other bills to pay etc. I do tend to do my research, bought my current Asus nForce 2 dlx mobo when it came out and its served me (and is still serving me) very very well indeed and as Socket A boards go its still one of the best of its type IMHO. I was hoping to do the same this time around and get similar value for money. The stuff available for 754 now does appear to be excellent, i'm just cautious given what new tricks are supposedly due in the next quarter or so. |
