Yeah, not sure how the 5400 rpm drive in my laptop would fair, but not as fast as modern 3.5 SATAII/III drives for sure.

Hey, I just upgraded the storage on my main box last week - 2x1TB Samsung F3 disks in software raid1. Wow those things are fast.

It's a really common fault for the power connection on the motherboard to fail. Sometimes it's solder-able if you're feeling brave. Lets hope it's not that :)
