Re: Time to Build a new PC

Thank you very much for the reply. New Egg is having a 48 hr sale going on right now, so I might swap some parts out to save money. For one, I don't know if I really need that beefy of a GPU. I...

I suppose it's about time to build a new PC. 4 years ago, with the help of this site, I built my first one and it has served me remarkably well. I can't believe it's been four years...

Re: Looking for advice on building cheap new PC

Well thank you. I can't say it enough. This is a somewhat nerve racking experience when you're doing it for the first time, especially when you are trying to stay under a certain budget. I...

Re: Looking for advice on building cheap new PC

Ok, then I will go with the OEM version.

Just to be perfectly clear, here is how I think it works. Please correct me if I'm wrong. And I'm sorry for all the questions.

    1. build pc.

Re: Looking for advice on building cheap new PC

Is installing an OEM operating system just like installing a retail version? This quote from microsoft is a bit puzzling:

What does aquiring the Microsoft OEM System Builder License mean? If...

Re: Looking for advice on building cheap new PC

I just discovered that the XP installation CD I was going to use with the new system won't work because it's a dell disk. So I need to get an OS as well. I want to buy an oem version because it's...

Re: Looking for advice on building cheap new PC

Yeah I went with the other CPU. Lost a bit of speed but it runs at such a low wattage and temperature combined with the fact that it cost about $30 less, made my decision for me. Thanks again.

Re: Looking for advice on building cheap new PC

Uh-oh, I just read the fan specs again, and it says it's for Intel CPU's. This won't work with my CPU will it?

Looks like I need this one or just go with this CPU and drop the fan from the order....

Re: Looking for advice on building cheap new PC

That was something I was considering as well. In the end, the user reviews of the PSU left me comfortable with it's ability to run what I need. I will keep a close eye on it though and upgrade if...

Re: Looking for advice on building cheap new PC

Great, thank you so much for all your help.

I went ahead and ordered everything from newegg.com just now. For some reason Tiger Direct wouldn't accept my debit card so I went with this RAM from...

Drop the sound card altogether? Does that Motherboard have pretty good on board sound or something? Not that sound is overly important to me, but I don't want it to be distractingly aweful. I took...

    Yes, the wife is formidable.

BTW, you never commented on my case/PSU. Should I take that to mean you think they are sufficient?

    Edit:

Re: Looking for advice on building cheap new PC

Yeah I would prefer the 4850 as well if only for the heat problems a lot of reviewers are complaining about on the 8800 (seems easily fixable by increasing the fan speed though). But it's $30 more...

Re: Looking for advice on building cheap new PC

Wow, that EVGA card is only $10 more than the card I had picked out, both after mail in rebates.

Thanks for your suggestions. It's amazing to think I can run any game out there on high settings...
