He'll need to login (or open a new shell) again before those groups take effect, if thats what you mean.

    Re: superuser accounts

I would try to find a group for them that would allow them to do what they need. Adding them to the root group would be a bad idea, cause if they knew what they were doing, they could just remove...

    Re: Top Evaluation (RAM)

Eye candy or anything GUI usually eats a lot of memory, so it's no surprise there.

    Re: Linux for newbies?

Ubuntu and Mephis are also 2 popular "level-linux" distros. I would vote for Ubuntu since the Ubuntu forums are a very nice resource, if you do have any problems

Re: Linux just rox, swap question though..

If you've got memory or swap, the kernel will try to use it.

Is that plenty of RAM under Mem or -/+ buffers/cache?

Poll: Re: What distro do you all use?

I used to have that quote in my signature. It's from the Debian Project Leader back in mid-late 90's.

I've been using Xubuntu lately since I got myself an amd64. Sudo drives me nuts, but it'll...

Just wanted to add that Linux does have DLLs (dynamically linked libraries). What it doesn't have is .dll files, which I think is what you were trying to say SP.

What version of X are you using? It's a shot in the dark, but there are known issues with 7.1+ w/ nvidia and ati binary drivers....

    Re: least memory linux

Linux is linux in terms of memory usuage, the kernel and usual process won't vary.

But when you get to Desktop Enviroments, KDE and Gnome will be sluggish with not a lot of memory. The leaner DEs...

In addition to the output of lspci, what distro are you running?
You may need to run lspci as root. So open a terminal, use su to become root, then enter lspci.

    Re: Arch Error

    What is this, windows?

Try giving it the path, including the drive.

    title=whatever
    root (hd0,6)
    kernel (hd0,6)/boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda7 ro vga=791
    initrd (hd0,6)/boot/initrd26.img

    Re: Views on Fedora

The project isn't "abandoned." It's just sponsored by RedHat, nothing more, nothing less. Which means that don't do anything. Fedora is just a big guinea pig for RedHat.

    Personally, I don't think...

    Re: Can't Remove Google Earth

I wouldn't surprised if you open the uninstall script, that it just calls rm on a bunch of files. So that might be one thing worth looking into.

Re: bind a key to an audio event?

Should be able to bind the alsa mute/unmute command (or a script that does it) to the key via one of a variety of apps (Hotkeys, lineakd, xbindkeys).

So first you'll need to find out the command...

    Re: Google Earth For Linux!

You get a no DISPLAY set error.
To fix it you just set DISPLAY.

DISPLAY is a system variable that tells (some) X applications where they should open (screenwise).

    Simple enough ;)
