    Re: Redo thermal paste?

Strange, then, that I've had RAM fail several times, but never a bad mainboard. I've finally found a stable configuration with my system but I am so sick of screwing with it I need a break before I...

    Re: Redo thermal paste?

I remember reading the docs for one of these memory-testing utils... It said that the software doesn't literally just test the memory, it tests the CPU and board also... Because of course those two...

    Re: Redo thermal paste?

Wow. I replaced the PSU, but it didn't help. I started testing my 3 mem sticks 1 at a time, and so far during tests of the first two (one at a time), I've either seen explicit errors listed in...

    Re: Redo thermal paste?

Not that anyone cares, but I've now replaced the PSU, and the freezes still happen. I now doubt it's the CPU overheating. My next desperate attempt is to bypass my ancient UPS and plug into a surge...

    Re: Redo thermal paste?

I've thoroughly tested the HD and RAM, and the locking up happens very reliably when the temp goes up too high. Could it be the PSU barfing when it gets too hot?

    Re: Redo thermal paste?

You know what I just realized? I feel like an idiot... The problem may be the thermal paste, but it shouldn't be locking the system at 50C in the first place. So maybe it's cooling just fine but...

    Redo thermal paste?

I have an embarrassingly ancient Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe board with an Athlon XP. I set this particular board up way back in 2003.

I had no problems with it for the longest time. But in the past...

Re: Again, Hugo Chavez is an f'ing moron

Well oh gee, Chavez still manages to enjoy a 65% approval rating (among Venezuelans), which is well over twice Bush's approval rating in the US.

Put another way: Once again, the failure that is...

    Poll: Re: Bush Approval Rating

Your stock portfolio doesn't define "the economy", and the Dow is not representative of how the average American is doing.

For most people in the US, personal income is stagnant and has been for...
  11. Re: Sound Card with Headphone Jack and Software Support?

I know everyone must think I'm nuts by this point, but this is worth posting... A really easy way to switch between speaker and headphone mode is with the cool little freeware utility QuickMix.

  12. Re: Sound Card with Headphone Jack and Software Support?

The above can be accomplished with SNDVOL32.EXE... Select Options > Properties, then click Other (All Channels Output Control is selected by default), and check all available volume controls.
  13. Re: Sound Card with Headphone Jack and Software Support?

Here are a couple screen shots that show how to switch between "speaker mode" and "headphone mode". I just keep the 8 (7.1) mode enabled at all times, with the Stereo Expander option also enabled.

  14. Re: Sound Card with Headphone Jack and Software Support?

Again, in hopes of helping to save someone else from the hassle I went though:

I didn't use the ancient drivers that came with the Chaintech card. I used the latest (4.73b as I write this)...
  15. Re: Sound Card with Headphone Jack and Software Support?

Maybe this will help someone else, since it was a mild pain in the ass for me to figure out.

I have the Chaintech AV-710 card installed. Going by the labels shown in the (essentially-useless)...
  16. Re: Sound Card with Headphone Jack and Software Support?

My goal is to stop diddling with jacks and switch between speakers and headphones using only software.
  17. Re: Sound Card with Headphone Jack and Software Support?

No problem. I appreciate the fact that you posted and took the time to post a screen capture. I've been thinking about doing away with 5.1 just to get around this issue.

    If I could afford it,...
  18. Re: Sound Card with Headphone Jack and Software Support?

I just ordered a Chaintech AV-710 (the card linked to above by WingZero). I figure that even if it doesn't do what I want (and no matter how I try by searching, I can't tell if it does), it's got to...
  19. Re: Sound Card with Headphone Jack and Software Support?

I just bought one of the above-linked switches at my local CompUSA for $20 (knowing it was worth less than half that... But anyway...) It's a piece of crap that will soon find its way back onto the...

  21. Re: Sound Card with Headphone Jack and Software Support?

I don't see how the Audigy2 ZS supports this either.... The CHM help file says that headphones are supported on Line Out 1, but that's also where you plug in front left/right. So... Where would...
  22. Re: Sound Card with Headphone Jack and Software Support?

Thanks. I looked into the Creative X-Fi ExtremeMusic, and to my surprise, you can't do it on that card. (Because the "Line Out 1 jack" has to be connected either to the front left/right speakers or...
  23. Sound Card with Headphone Jack and Software Support?

I used a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz for years, until it finally decided to give out on me recently. I'm now using my on-board sound, and I hate it with the type of passion usually reserved only for...

    Re: A7N8X-E Deluxe and SATA

You don't need to do that; you can simply create a primary partition (where Windows will go), and set it active prior to running Windows setup. Boom, it becomes C:, and everything else can be...

    Re: A7N8X-E Deluxe and SATA

From what I see, the board enumerates SATA first, but Windows does it the reverse. In DOS (and in BootIt NG), my SATA drive is HD0, but in Windows, the IDE drives start at HD0. I hate that, since...
