major problems with optical and USB

Hi all. I have not been here for a long time. I was a mod for a while back in the day, and maybe still am. I don't know. I come by now and then and peek in, see what's happening. I had forgotten...

    Re: The Windows 8 thread.

I work at a state university and any OS upgrades at this time are Win 7 only, no Win 8. I think the only folks using win 8 are those with laptops, and in fact I have not seen anyone with win 8...
  4. Re: Anyone still have their old AMD XP's around? What have you done with yours?

I have a k6-III 450 OCed to 550 that in an old Compaq Presario that I still have sitting on the shelf. Last time I fired it up, probably about a year ago, it still ran quite well.

    Re: The Windows 8 thread.

I actually was at a Microsoft Store opening last week in Salt Lake City. They were just raving about how successful Surface Pro has been. IMHO it's an awesome little machine (I got to play with...

    Re: The Windows 8 thread.

Yeah, like I said earlier, I was surprised how comfortable the laptop with touch screen turned out to be. I mean, I'm literally using the keyboard, touch screen, and touch pad back and forth all at...

    Re: The Windows 8 thread.

Hi all. We just purchased our son in HS an Asus Q500A - BHI7, a 15 inch notebook with win8 and a touchscreen. The latter is what I wanted to address, because it definitely changes how you interact...

It will be interesting to see how Win works with this input source, assuming it works as advertised, or at least does so eventually:

    Re: no access message

Thanks for the response. Please keep in mind that all was working well until two days ago. I should have made clear that the WD My Passport drive worked in the ASRock just fine before, just like...

    no access message

Hi all. Got a mystery of sorts. In my ASRock i5 system (see sig), my optical drive is "not accessible" in Win 7 64 bit. This seemed to happen suddenly (I do not use the optical drive all that...
  14. Re: Anyone still have their old AMD XP's around? What have you done with yours?

Amen, brother, and much to my wife's consternation. So much of the old stuff (and new stuff as well) just keeps working and working and working.

Re: Gigabyte & RAM upgrade Help

Still slow? During boot, it may simply be taking longer for the system to check all that ram. Also, I had a question, is your cpu up to all that new ram? It looks like it should be if it's a good...
  16. Re: Anyone still have their old AMD XP's around? What have you done with yours?

I used mine in systems that I ultimately donated to my son's school. It has been quite a few years now. They are probably in a junk heap somewhere now. I still have a couple of chips around,...

    Re: The Windows 8 thread.

I've been using the last RC on my 4 year-old C2D 2.0 laptop with a SSD drive, and it is quite awesome actually. Amazingly fast, and I am used to how fast a new build on a SSD runs, and this runs...
  18. Re: Anyone still have their old AMD XP's around? What have you done with yours?

I had an unlocked Barton 2500 that I ran at 13 X 200 = 2.6GHz back in 2004. It was just awesome. And it was stabled. Used a kt-600 Albatron mobo. I loved albys, sorry to see them go.

Re: new AMD chips looking interesting

Well, they have had some reshuffling at management lately. One can only hope. Also, AMD is doing just fine with video cards, they make great cards, no problem there. They are also doing some good...

  21. Re: In a Pickle! Need help to set up OCX Agility 3 in Vista!

Re: Memtest86+ burnt out graphics card.

memtest places minimal demands on any vid card. It probably even works with an old Hercule card. I cannot imagine that memtest had anything to do with that vid card dying.

The one odd thing about that whole presentation, which has been almost a month ago, is how long a wait before they put it out. the non i5 version comes out first, and it comes out when Win8 comes...
  24. Re: Anyone still have their old AMD XP's around? What have you done with yours?

I have a Compaq Presario from 1999 that I upgraded everything except the Super 7 motherboard, and I replaced the K6-II 380 and upgraded to a K6-III 450 that I overclocked to 550 and 600 and it still...
