Re: Any tips for "old" newbie?

    Thanks for the idea.

But I have had a good play with the Vista release candidates before it came out so I am reasonably comfortable with how it works.

The main attraction of Vista for me is...

Re: Any tips for "old" newbie?

Thanks for the reassurance! It all seems quite daunting right now, but I am sure it won't be so bad when I get my hands on the gear.

From the sound of it, I may have wasted even more money that...

    Any tips for "old" newbie?

I note its nearly 2 years since I visited these forums. I used to come here a lot back in the old days with my ASUS A78VX, ASUS A78NX, DFI Infinity, Abit xyz, MSI K8N Neo2 etc

    Well after many...

Re: Athlon64 FSB Memory dividers etc question...

Thanks for your reply. But my question wasn't "is it worth it". It was "what is the difference".

BTW, Contrary to what you say I certainly DO think there is merrit in overclocking the memory...

Athlon64 FSB Memory dividers etc question...

There's something I have often puzzled about, and never known the answer, so I thought I would ask you brainy guys here.

Lets suppose you don't want to overclock much and you have an Athlon 64...

Re: Thinking of dual core - but which chip?

:bang: Why do some people just jump in on threads without reading the other posts.

    To answer your meaningless comment:

    1. 3800+'s only have 2x512 cache, not 2x1MB. I wanted 1MB per core as my...

Re: Thinking of dual core - but which chip?

Well, plugged the new CPU in today (supplier screwed up the delivery so I only got it yesterday).

Things look pretty encouraging. After checking it all works OK, upped the FSB to 210 and now to...

Re: Thinking of dual core - but which chip?

    Thanks for your thoughts guys.

In the end, I went for a 4800+ (Toledo). It will arrive on Wednesday and I will report back as to how I get on with it.

What persuaded me to go for the 4800+ was...

Thinking of dual core - but which chip?

I am running an Opteron 146 at 2800MHz at the moment, but fancy going dual core.

But I am a bit out of touch on the technology front, having spent the last year or so concentrating on other...

  12. HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool: Sorted thanks!

For some reason HP seem to have pulled all versions of the "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool" from their websites. (How very unhelpful of them!)

If anyone knows where this utility is still...

    Re: K8N Neo2 and opteron 165 - No Cool'n'quiet?

Steven, did you manage to get this working?

I have exactly the same problem, albeit with an Opty 146. C&Q used to work with my old A64, but now it doesn't.

This is with Easybios 1.C3 ...

Re: K8N Neo2 Plat and TCCD - Suggestions?

That's probably true if you want to hit 300+ MHz. But the OP only wants 260 out of his. I would say all TCCD will do 260 with EASE in a NEO2. Forget complicated setting, just whack it in and go.

Re: New Venice's no good? Go San Diego?

Man that's just not right. (I wish it was!)

Most singlecore Opterons won't do 3.0GHz at all, although a very small number will. Many won't even do 2.8 and the vast majority of those that will,...

Re: I want a new processor!!

Radley, I'd take Alex's advice if I were you. Changing PC components - or indeed building a whole new PC - is not hard to do, but there is quite a lot to learn and its possible to mess things up if...

Re: Worried sick about cpu temps please help)

    What a great tip!

Just read this and thought I would hoover out the dust from the inlet and outlet fan filters.

Dropped 3c off my case and CPU temps straight away! :-)

Re: Neo2 Plat North Bridge fan

Is it quieter than the original?

My Northbridge fan is the noisiest thing in the system, but I can't fit a Zalman passive job, because I have a VGA Silencer on the graphics card that *completely*...
  21. Re: New Opteron, new bios and new problems. Any ideas?

Thanks Ricky. But I am sure its not the cooler. The MSI board reads temps too high, so the real temps are probably around 8c lower than reported. I can drop the temps by something like that amount...
  22. Re: New Opteron, new bios and new problems. Any ideas?

Thanks for the advice about memtest.

But I didn't understand everything you said. Please could you translate "check timings, but i doubt it ull have probs at stock or so" into English? ;-)

  23. New Opteron, new bios and new problems. Any ideas?

I wonder if any brainboxes here have any ideas what's going on here.

Recently I bought an Opteron 146 off ebay, as an upgrade to my old A64 3200+. I have been running the A64 3200+ at 10x250 for...

  25. Re: How to change a motherboard without reinstalling Windows and applications.

Haven't read the whole thread, but you can nearly always do a motherboard swap - even with different chipsets.

However, if you are going to have a show-stopping problem, its nearly always the disk...
