That's not very bad the 1st gen i7 is still a decent processor. However the GTS 250 should be replaced with atleast a GT1030 make sure its the GDDR5 version.

What's your plans with this build you...

In my experience when PSU's die they take the rest of the system with them. The best way to make sure your psu is still good is to use a voltmeter while the cpu and gpu is under load. The rails...

Yes the x16 PCIe slot is compatible with x1 cards. They just look funny plugged into the full length slot.
If you want to use a PCIe card in a PCI slot you need an adapter like this....

The lenovo for sure the 1050 will wipe the floor with the 940Mx. Also i try to avoid all U classed processors.
