    Talking Radeon 8500 overclocked@...

My radeon 8500 has core cpu/memory speed @ 250mhz, i know it is the retail version but the question is.........

How high can this thing be overclocked without burning it up?
Also, what kind of overclocking have u all done.

I finally have mine running stable at 270/265 3dmark2001 scores are 7100-7189.

    I have a athlon xp 1600+(1400mhz) Oc'd to 1533mhz with an ak31 v3.1 motherboard, Via KT266A chipset.

I want to know how the radeon compares with other mobos?
I have also seen people with the same config as mine and wonder how they get 8000+ 3dmark2001 scores.

    Thanks for all replies.

    Re: Radeon 8500 overclocked@...

BTW - if your speeds are 250/250, that's NOT the retail version, that's the OEM version. Retail is 275/275.

I had OEM overclocked to 280/260-265. Once I passed 260 on the mem, it started to have problems after awhile, anything over 265, good luck...

thanks for the reply, some people make mistakes. oem-retail, 25mhz diff. 270/270 and i get artifacts, too much for the cpu on the oem version. 265 is max.

    How High?/

First of all asmolenski is correct,,, 275 is the default Retail

    250 is the LE

    230 is the LE/LE

Anyways,,,with a good GPU cooler you should be able to run 325 no problems

Without,,just stock you should be able to run 305 with no problems.

The Highest I have seen is by MACCI who held the 3D mark #1 spot for 3 months.

Was 385,,,thats pretty awesome if you ask me,,,seeing how the GF4 Ti4600 is only 320

And the new RV250 that is soon to be release will be 350 Core clock default.

What tweaking utility do u use?
also, u said i could get 300 out of the gpu!( w/ good cooling ), how high can i go stock without frying the gpu. ( new system and wife wouldnt like me putting another 200-300$ into it only a week after i got it ) Thanks for the input and i will mess around with it tonight.

I currently use powerstrip for overclocking.

I believe Radeon 8500 was referring to retail (275/275) 8500's hitting 300/305 or 325/325. I've never heard of oem's hitting those speeds.

    I have the R8500LE with 4ns memory
    could do 280/260 max overclock

without doing any modding, flashed bios to retail, and now does 300/280 stable ..

will do volt mod and pencil trick to get memory up higher , but want to get some ramsinks first..

will do 300/300 without locking up, but get the shooting rays of light syndrome from memory not haven enough juice to it...

after downloading the flash utility, unzip to its own folder, then remove the bios images that dont apply to your card...ie all the 7500 and what not image files...I am running winXP so I did everything from a floppy..after you remove the non essential files the rest will fit on a floppy ...

just copy and paste contents of folder to a good floppy( not the folder itself mindyou..just the files with in)

put floppy in a: drive and reboot, making sure yer bios is set to boot off of floppy first ...

when you get to the A: prompt ...just type in "start2.exe" (minus the quotes)

program will start itself and give you options to choose from..from then on its completely self explainitory ...if not in United States, choose PAL if in US choose the other one..(forgot what its called)

program will let you choose retail bios, custom performance retail bios.., OEM bios, or customize your own timings...its pertty simple

    ...hope that helps.

    I'm at woik too...

good luck with the flash..if running on fat32, then just unzip files to C: drive and hit F8 while booting up to boot to command prompt ...then type start2.exe from C: prompt and flash off of hard drive (generally safer) instead of floppy...

I've reflashed card about 4 times now from a floppy, messen around with different bios' ...no probs

I have been using power strip too...but I'm kind of a minimalist when it comes to running programs on comp...so just flashed bios to what is stable and let card take care of itself...thats just me tho.

    Talking

    I hear yah,,,

I agree if you comfortable with that,,,and If I owned an OEM I probably would do the same.

But the only thing I want to do is to increase the default core with the pencil trick and get my core default around 305 or higher and then use a progy to OC it alittle higher.

Not until I put a new CHROME ORB on my GPU,,,or Indiglo ORb
