Gainward GeForce3 Ti-450 failing DirectX D3D test

Okay, This is my first post but have found lots of good info here of things to do and not to do to your system (this site rocks). I put togather my system a couple of months ago and has been rock solid except for some self induced problems from tweaking. It has been running games perfect with graphics set to the max(Castle Wolfenstian, Ghost Recon, Combtflight, Roguespr,etc.)until I tried Max Pane with gave me an error starting "M.P. requires a directx8 compatable vid card. see readme....". So I read the readme and here is the problem. When I run dxdiag and test Direct3D it will pass Direct7 but fail Direct8 componet test. Here is the error "Direct3D test results: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)" I have reinstalled DX8.1 and tried all drivers(Gainwards,Microsofts.nVidias) but have not reinstalled WinXP yet(last resort).

PLEASE,PLEASE HELP!
