can i use the RAID on a 35GTR as regular IDE's?

hi, i was wondering if/how can i use the RAID connectors on my Shuttle AK35GTR as regular IDE connectors? basically i want both my harddrives on the raid controller, and each optical drive (CD-RW and DVD) on it's own separate controller. but i can't get the shuttle to boot from the raid controller. it won't boot my harddrive when i put it on there. i'm running WinXP btw. any help please. thanks.

Do you get a BSOD when you try to boot off the HPT controller? Something to the effect of "Inaccessable boot device"

If so, you may want to install WinXP while the HDD is on the regular IDE and then move it to the RAID controller... because you should be able to use the RAID controllers as regular IDEs (for hard drives that is, not for CD drives and the like).

I am not sure what BIOS the RAID chip is using on your board (I haven't gotten my main computer up and running) but maybe chainging it to the 2.31 BIOS could help... although I don't know if shuttle includes it with their BIOSes or, if someone has modified the motherboard BIOS to include the 2.31 BIOS... or if it is even relavent (I am coming from Abit boards where it was like that)

    kaotic,

All you should need to do is "turn on" the raid ports in your bios, and then install your raid administrator, which should be on your c.d., shut down, then just move your H.D. ide cable over to raid1.
That should do it, no re-installing your os or anything else.
btw, you probably will have a short delay >5secs. that you didn't have before as you boot up, but i believe that this is normal.

I always use master and slave settings because CS can cause nothing but problems. . .

    Just completed my raid

If you just want to connect your single ide to raid, pretty much like the others said, if using a blank h/drive, you will first have to sys c: or format c:/ q,, not sure if the command format is correct, but you need to have system files on the h/drive first, after this, you can plug it into raid, enable highpoint raid in bios, under Periphials, save and exit, make sure you have it set to boot properly in main bios, Im using cable select on all 3 of my drives, "connected to raid" no problems yet. If you are only going to run a single drive, I would reccomend using the IDE, there isn't much performance diff w/ a single drive. Raid is really designed for dual arrays, in which there are at least 4 diff. configs., "I think", 2 of which give much higher file transfer speeds, the other 2 offer slightly less performance, but more reliability. For a dual array, I believ you need to "sys" both drives, coneect them on the same cable as you would a master and slave, I would set as cable select, "mine works", Enter main bios and select Boot 0, enable high point raid "control H" and Create Raid, I chose the first option, stripe 0, 64, then proceed down through the other options until you select boot drive, choose which one you wish to boot, if their both blank, it wont matter which. Before hitting escape, to exit, make sure your operating sys., install disc is in your drive, hit escape, then type Y, that should do it. Hope this helps. If this doesn,t work, you amy have to set drives as master/slave, but mine are working fine on cable select, and I have a dual array w/ a single spare, with its own op, sys.,,,GoTte

thanks for the info buddy. but i already have WinXP loaded on the drive. basically in the end, i want to get each of my drives on each Raid connector w/o setting up raid. i want to purely use them as regular IDE's. i used to have a soyo dragon plus and i could run the hard drive and use that raid controller as a regular ide, but that board has been long gone for me. i think this shuttle board is better. but thanks for the great info. i'm going to try this soon. so far i've tried to enable raid and put my hard drive on raid 1 and leave the cd rw and the dvd on ide 1 and 2 respectively. and i tried to get the raid utilitly to boot from it but it didn't. but i'll try what everyone suggested. great info in this forum. i like it.

    Angry

I followed the suggestions to set up the raid ports for ide use and it won't work. I even tried installing/using a ata133/Raid card and that won't even work. Any better proven instructions out there?

In raid set up "bios" did you choose boot drive?

One thing I neglected to mention, after you enable highpoint Raid in your main bios, you may also need to enter your raid bios, I believe hit f10 when raid screen appears "whatever it tells you to hit" once there, click "choose boot disk" then choose the drive showing below you wish to boot, if done properly, it should change to "XX??XX 0", this should do it, hit esc to exit and say a small prayer, "some hard drives use no jumper at all for single master, and make sure you have a blue cable conn, connected to the raid IDE. I took me a few tries to get mine to boot, but after I figured it out, I was ashamed because of how simple it is, also, in both dual array and single drive configuration, I used cable select and it worked ok, mine "western digital", different drives may react differentely. With only one drive on Raid, the only options you can perform are uDMA mode 5 and choose boot disk. Hope this helps,,,,,,GoTte

I am running windows xp pro, booting it from the raid ide 3 port. First I set bios to boot from cd rom, then ide 0 second. Installed wxp pro. Got it completly the way I wanted it. Created a restore point. Then activated the raid in bios. Re booted wxp pro while still on the ide 0 port. Installed the spacewalker drivers for the raid after the audio had been installed. I have read some problems in the order you install raid and audio, mine was good. Once the raid was there a-ok in the device manager I re booted into bios and set my first boot device to raid ide 3 (actually it is scsi in bios) port and moved my boot drive to that port. Think I left the raid setup at default.

    Running::::

    xp 1800+
    896 megs ram
boot drive is a maxtor 60 gig udma 133
2 more hd on raid ports
    removable hd on ide 0
    cdrw on ide 0
    standard cd on ide 2

System takes about 10 to 15 seconds less to boot using the raid compared to the standard dma 100 port.
