Obviously wait. I can't see myself spending more than $300 Canadian on a component that will cost like half the price in like a year.

I learned my lesson when I spent $650 Canadian on my GeForce 2 32meg when it came out, not that I havent got my moneys worth but thats just way too much money to spend on one component.

I would like to get it the day it comes out, but I will save my money and buy it when I can. I will definitely not be paying $399 for any card, no matter how fast (I'm just saying that cause I'm broke hehe).
I'm considering buying the cheaper version of the Radeon when it comes out, but I doubt it'll come out anytime soon. Since the Radeon 9700 will have no competition, they won't see the need to make a budget card out of the R300 core. Even when the NV30 comes out they'll be battling it out, but they probably won't come out with that budget card until they feel they need to compete badly i.e. if there is a budget NV30 version out there or something. I'm willing to shell out about $300 for the 9700, but not $400, I'd rather hold off if that's the case. There will probably be considerably cheaper online though, so I'll know then.
The most money i've ever spent on a video card is $200 (voodoo2 w/ $100 rebate).
Looks like I will be using my current video card till sometime early next year when I upgrade my entire computer(except some things like monitor,sound,speakers,etc.). At that time I will evaluate what I want to do. Either the NV30 or the R300 refresh part(if it comes early enough) will be on my want list. Although I WILL be eyeing the AIW Radeon 9700!![]()

Anyone know how the 2D on the 9700 will be? I assume it will be good, just wondering.
Well ATI has had a good record for 2d quality (since they manufacture their own cards youd dont have to worry about cheap components (although ATI has been selling theough 3rd party OEMs lately though, I wouldn't worry about it though....)
the 2 most that i've spent on a video card was for my g4 for $450 when it came out and the legendary Voodoo2 for $270 when it came out, so when the next big king of 3d cards come out in 2003 i'll dish out as much $500 if i had to,

Why not wait for the NV30 or the Radeon 10000 (ATI's real competitor to the NV30)? R10,000 should operate at higher GPU speeds and most likely memory too. I doubt there will be any changes made to the architecture, just a cooler running GPU running at higher speeds with faster memory.

I'm waiting for the NV30 until I make my decision whether to go ATi or not. By then, both the NV30 and the RV350 should be out...
As of now, the 9700 does not contain anything extremely special to warrant upgrading from a Gf4.

$399...thats about $615 canadian...At present( locally) the
the GF4 Ti 4600 is around $650...so i see no reason why i wouldn't grab the Radeon 9700 if the prices stay like that.
if the prices of the GF4 drop to around $400, then i'll be swayed towards them, but i highly doubt that there will be a $ 200 + drop, its too much to lose for retailers.
So its ATI 9700 here i come, and as soon as those sukars are available, its mine...mine i tell ya....all mine !!!!

since i only got a gf2u, i'm going straight for it, means i've jumped 2 generations of cards (gf3+4) so for me it'll be a small revolution in performance.
after that, its time for a 2200xp (was gonna wait for the 2400 so i would get equivalent to 1ghz extra power) and maybe also an nforce2 mobo to go with it.
The future looks bright but not for my wallet.
I'm still running an ATI Rage Fury 128, yeah baby! I've heard hints that the 9700 is the first in a series. There should be a card, maybe the 10,000, that will use DDR II and I think that's the new card for me once it hits around 200. I'm really excited about the new programming tools by both nvidia and ati (Cg and Rendermonkey respectively).
I program for fun in my spare time and I think it would be quite impressive to make some stupid program, like a calculator or something that has displacement mapping and insane animation. HAAAAAAAAA. The 64bit or 128bit floating point rendering is about the most exciting thing of all.
Good point about DX9 and the timing of when it will be important.
Besides, I just got the GF4 a few months ago and I really have not even tapped it yet. Mainly 'cause theres not many games yet that saturate the GPU with enough instructions. 16x12 is a great ride right now with the DX7/8 generation of games I play.
So NO, there will be no 9700 here in my future...
