    Radeon 9700 problem

my friend just got a 9700 today (upgrading from a ti4600)... the problem is that in the start menu.. the font is really jacked up.. heres a screenshot...

also, not much of a problem, but it was weird that we benchmarked it and got only 10k 3dmarks (system is 1600xp, iwill xp333, 512mb ddr).. we reformatted, tried different drivers, tried disabling hydravision.... everything i could think of

i personally think the problem may lie in that he has only a 300watt generic power supply and that the 9700 is drawing too much power... considering that his rig has all its expansion bays and slots just about filled.. also i checked the 5v rail with MBM5 and it came out to 6.09 !!!!!

    any ideas?

It may be the power supply. I'm surprised he got away with it when using the ti4600. The PSU would be a good place to start since the vid cards do use alot of poer.

MBM5 and XP333 don't work together. He needs ALI's hardware monitor to see correct voltages. Maybe new ATi and ALI will have issues now but it's unlikely caused by the PSU in this situation.

Just for the sake of argument did he try the leaked 6159 set of drivers? And although I would not run it with a PSU that low as long as the rails are stable and he can game with no visible pixelation or distoration I would say he's ok. Try those drivers and see what they prove or disprove

I'm running an Iwill XP333-R with an R9700 and MBM5 just fine. Sure, MBM's voltages are off, but the temps are accurate. I don't have the text corruption your friend is having though. I would definitely try the 6159 (leaked) drivers as a fix. The 3dmk1 score seems low, but the XP333-R needs a high FSB to get really good 3dmk1 scores. I get 13k with my MP 1900 at 9.5x180FSB. The more impressive number is getting 9k with 4xfsaa and 16xaf enabled at 10x166 fsb...

This problem also occures with the 8500 in XP,, if you goto Display
    >Apperance>EFFECTS>and make sure the "show shadows under menus" are UNCHECKED,,that will take care of that.

Its a real simple solution,, and yes causes havoc in XP if not done.

well i brought over my system to his place and we tried swapping different parts to isolate the problem.... after putting his 9700 in my rig, putting my 350watt antec into his rig.. swapping ram, cpu... we come to the conclusion that the 9700 does note like the iwill xp333-r motherboard... he ordered a gigabyte kt400 board... hopefully ther wont be any more problems

The only thing my 9700 didn't like about my Iwill XP333-R was the combination of a high FSB (185 MHz) and two DIMMs. Lowering the FSB to 166 OR removing one DIMMs resolved the only issues I had (popping polygons in OpenGL games).

    Radeon 8500:
The games I've run withtout issue are (all with AA and AF unless noted):

    Q3A
    UT
    GTA3 (without AF)
    Giants
Commanche 4 (looks sweet with AA and AF)
    Ground Control
    SS:SE

Games I have but haven't had time to try yet:

    HL
    CS
    Dungeon Siege
    Warcraft3
    Falcon 4
    Alice
    DeusEx
...bunch of others going back as far as Longbow

    All in time.
