    Building new Gaming PC...OS preference?

Ok, my new Gamer PC is about ready...it consists of:

Enermax 10 bay Server w/ five 80mm fans
    Enermax 350 PSU
    Leadtek 18D PRO nForce2 Mobo
    Maxtor DiamondMax 40gig 7200rpm HD
    256x2 Samsung PC2700
    Leadtek A250-TD 4400

I have a copy of 98SE and WinME and wanted your thoughts of which OS would be better. I know most will say XP and some W2K, but without having to wait for St. Nick, which would be the best choice?
    Thanks!

WinXP or 2000pro get my vote.

Gaming with 2000Pro can be troublesome at times but is 100 fold a better operating system than 98. Not to mention 98 is not going to be supported by Microsoft in the near future.

Between the two, go for 98se. As for WinMe... Let's just say I haven't heard the best of comments about it .

    Cool

ME is just SE with some new bugs coded in. It was intended as a test bed for some of the features of 2k, but it really didn't work. Worst OS M$ have done since DOS 4.0

I actually prefer 2k to XP, but both are a mile ahead of any version of 98, even SE. Beg Santa in your most humble voice for one or the other - XP will be cheaper and be supported for longer.

Thanks for all your comments...decided to install my Seagate 40 gig 5400 rpm HD temporarily(WinME) and 'make due' till Xmas. This way I can use my new PC and not have to reformat in a couple of weeks. Thanks all!

You know the old saying,,,just saw NO TO DRUGS!!!

JUST SAY NO TO 9X OS's,,,,,

For one simple reason,,, win95,98,98SE and WinME all DO NOT KNOW HOW TO ALLOCATE SYSTEM MEMORY!!!

So for that reason alone,, win2000(SP3) or winXP is night and day better than the old Caveman 9x OS's.

And if you think those are good,,wait till you see Longhorn!

    Peace.

If you decide to buy XP don't buy the retail version. Search the web for the OEM version. Same thing. You can also buy additional licenses if you need it on more than one PC. I got 1 CD with license + 2 additional licenses of WinXP Home FULL VERSION for under $200. That's the cost of just one full RETAIL version of XP Home. XP Pro is more but IMO you don't really need Pro unless you have a burning need for one of it's features that XP Home doesn't have. The only thing the OEM version can't do is upgrade your existing OS. It must be a clean install. No big deal for me since I always do clean installs anyway when switching OSes.

    Good luck!
