Best Linux Distro for a newbie?

    Hi all:

I am not a complete newb when it comes to linux but I am definately by no means an intermediate user. I've run redhat 7 and madrake 8 before but with not much success as I get frustrated with issues like installing / uninstalling programs. This brings me to my next question... I like redhat 8 but I hear that it has no package manager... so if I want to install something unless I do it command line I am stuck right? I really like the redhat desktop and genome2 IMO looks much better than KDE. All said and done... I need ease of use!

What do you guys recomend Mandrake or Redhat and why?

Red Hat uses rpm for package management (so its no biggy to install or uninstall stuff, finding dependencies can be a pain sometimes though and I too agree that gnome2 looks better than kde

I wont get into the KDE vs. Gnome debate. From MY experiences, Redhat is a bit more stable than Mandrake but it's a bit less bleeding edge. I'ma redhat man and ahve been for a looong time. I've tried Mandreake but have always come back to redhat.
Both are nice so why not try them both if you can. Then keep what you like. YMMV.

If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

same here... I want RH8, but at the same time I reeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaalllllyyyyyyyy need NTFS support. Mandrake 9 fills that position, but it doesnt look as nice as RH8. what to do, what to do...

please don't say recompile your kernel. 75,000 questions I'd rather not sort through and answer, to change one thing.
