    Low HD Performance

It seems that every benchmark program i run, i seem to get slow HD results. I have been told not to rely on sandra, but now my pcmark HD scores are terribly low.

The only thing i can think of, Does the orientation of my pci cards have any thing to do with this since my HDs are connected to a PCI card.

    Here is my current setup:
    AGP: ABIT GF4 4200
    PCI1: N/A
    PCI2: N/A
    PCI3: Sound Blaster Audigy
    PCI4: N/A
    PCI5: N/A
    PCI6: Promise Ultra100 IDE CArd

Take hard drive benchmarks with a grain of salt. The various file systems perform differently under those benchmarks. If the drive loads programs quickly and is fast, then don't worry about it.

as a general rule of thumb avoid first and last pci slots as they may share with vga

look at irq's in device manager

When you say "terribly low", I think very low. Meaning the hard drives are running PIO mode than DMA. When you boot the computer, what mode does it say the drives are running in?

Try programs like HDTach. If you could give some number of what you're getting and what you expect, that would be helpful.

Well Hdtach reports goodd results but programs like pcmark report a HDD score of 800, while everyone with similar hdd setup are getting 1200.

Device Manager states the Promise ULtra Card uses IRQ 19 which is also used by the Video Card.

Try the card in Slot4, and see if that helps. In the manual should be a listing of what IRQs are shared with what.

Also, what chipset does that board use? Nforce? VIA? AMD?

Try looking into some sort of latency patch, that might help regardless of chipset. Had some very good results with it even on AMD chipsets.

Hate to bring up an old topic, but I was doing a search for this problem and it's at the top of the list.

I have the same problem. Promise Ultra100TX2 on an A7N8X with two WD1200JB's (120GB--8MB cache) and get about 20MB/s read and 35MB/s write. YES, 20MB READ and 35MB WRITE. Stange, huh?
Sometimes I feel like I'm becoming a dinosaur.
