    Ti4600 cooler fits on R9XXX?

Does anyone know if a Ti4600 cooler will fit on a Radeon 9500 or higher? Is there any way to mod this cooler so it will fit properly?

I've been hearing more stories of R9XXXs burning up, so I think it's time to look into alternative cooling methods.

Burning up? Gosh! If that's true, I will probably think more than N times before getting a 9700pro.

Does this apply to all the manufacturers? I am think of getting an ATI retail one after GFFX is launched, so if ATI ones are fine, then I will still go ahead and grab one.

I got this impression by surfing the titles of threads in the Rage3D forum (i.e. "I just burnt my R9700" etc.). But it could be a lot of different problems causing these cards to fail. For all we know, someone left their socks in front of the intake fan.

But I think the cooling on the R9XXX could be improved to reduce the chances of this happening. The large shim on the GPU doesn't help either, but at least that can be removed.

But FWIW, no one here at AMDMB has encountered a card failing due to heat.

I think ATI solved a lot of these problems with the revision 3.0 of the card that are sold now.

The GF4 coller can fit, but you will need to drill holes into it and add a plate for it to come into contact with the GPU.

    According to Redrum over there:

Theres a lip around the core that keeps the heat sink from touching it.
    ...
I just bought a new ATI 9700 rev 3 Pro and it has the problem too. Not sure yet of what aproach I'm going to take to correct this.
I'm still reading that thread. Thanks for the link!

Here's the money post! Seems like a simple mod too!

    http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthre...eadid=33662733

    12 hi-res pics of xriversx's GF4 cooler mod for his R9700 Pro.

    - Measure
    - Drill
    - Screw
    - Done!

Seems like he had to cut one of the fan holders off the fan assembly so that there would be clearance for the fan blades. Interesting.

About the only thing that I know of that's foolproof for good contact is the swiftech mcw-50 that I have (if you do water cooling). Swiftech was smart and milled down the edges of the copper plate so that the part that makes contact w/ the core is raised up much higher, perfect contact every time. Sounds like some HSF mfg's need to look at their design and use some of their ideas. They also designed it so it can be used on both GF4 and any radeon w/o modification, very well thought out product.

Anything that uses the same basic pin pattern of a NB cooler will do the trick, the hole spacing is identical.
