Parrr-tay? Normally when I end up in a bar it's to drown my sorrows, not to party. This place needs to be more depressing. Depression, people! Depression!

Not that I have much bar experience anyway. Drinking age kind of prevents that.

    ok... here's my problems...

me... as many of you are a student in University... second year in I.T.... i must mention that i was a fluky person...... in high school... i never studied on my test and i got low-high 70s... if i studied.. i got like low-high 60s.. (not everytime of course)... getting into University is really a fluke... my average mark @ that time was like high 60s and i thought i will get reject from enter into University... i apply 12 different Major in different University and I got 2 University accept me.... 1 is McMaster U for Humanity and da other is York for I.T... i picked York... my first year is OK since i still fluke on everything.... i didn't study as hard as it should be but i m still passing...not to mention that i win a couple times of Pro-Line (sport betting)... entering this year... i was kinda fall behind VERY quicky.. and i noticed that i don't like to study as well... even when I try my best to study.... and i mean very concentrate... but still no help... then I start to remember when i was a kid (in highschool i mean) i told my mom that i don't like to study.. i just like to work... but my mom was then telling me to stay in school if there's a chance... i will have a better future...
but now guess what... i don't even know if i can still continue on like this and entering into my third year... i m afraid of getting kick out... getting kick out is not scary but my whole life seems to lose da direction... just like a ship in da ocean without the radar or map or whatever..... I was planning to work but as the economy is @ da worst time i've even seen..... i don't think i can get any work that can good enough to support my life.... well... ppl might hire me to wash the washroom or throwing garbage but that's not what i wanna become......... (i m afraid that's too long... move on to da next post...)

Your dad makes $10,000 USD a year?

Seriously...how old are you? How bad are your school grades? Financial stuff pays well...if you want to be an entrepreneur that would be cool too but risky.

Don't epxect to get anywhere without knowledge. You can do it without a lot of money or power but knowledge is key.

20.... chinese...my school grade is average C first year.... and this year.... D or E... maybe even worst....

that's the point... I FULLY understand that but the thing is knowledge is importnat to me and i love it... but the thing is I HATE BOOKS.... like everytime when i try to do some reading... i fall asleep.... of course except when there's a test or exam the next day.....

btw.... I m a person who likes to compare with others as well... all my friend (or i mean their parents) are alot richer than me (my parent) but i don't mind that at all... but i was thinking if in the future... if me and my friend failed in school... they can go and work under their parent's company ... (most of them have manufacture or trading companys) .. but my dad is working for others so nothing i can do..... and i don't wanna be a beggar where my friend is still rich.... I know my thought are naive but i can't help.... and rite now... i still haven't discuss this issue with my parents yet since i m afraid... and i don't know what their reaction will be...

hey, i'm in the same boat as you chuson..

    grades really suck this year..

i've really got to get my act together, it helps having a school that offers CISCO Academy and Java Programming classes for universities to look at

You're right Stang Man, there's nothing saying you can't have a good time if you're under 21. First of all, that's just the legal age, you're still physiologically capable of consuming alcohol . Second, I'm not a big drinker, and there's nothing that says you can't have fun sober. Hangovers aren't all that fun anyway, trust me on that.

OK Chuson, I can't say I'm in the exact same boat, but I know where you're coming from. I had a 4.0 GPA in high school, graduated #2 in my class (roughly 500 people) and didn't do a lick of studying the entire time. So yeah, no study skills, I thought cracking a book would kill me. Now I'm in my second year of university and spend the vast majority of my "free" time doing homework and studying. Shoot, the closest thing I've had to a date recently was writing essay outlines with this girl in my sociology class while shooting the breeze . That was a lot of fun actually, strangely enough. I used to have the same problems, I'd doze off while reading and wake up an hour before I had to go to class, never finishing the study material. College is an adjustment. It's tough to buckle down, sometimes it takes some major lifestyle changes. In my case, I gave up video games. I barely play them anymore, an hour per week at most. I'm like you though, I HATE school. The prospect of four or more years after I graduated scared me to death. And yeah, it's tough taking classes if you're not exactly sure what you want to go into. I had a crisis like that a couple of months ago, went into freak-out mode trying to decide if I wanted to finish my engineering degree or not (for the record, decided to stick with it). My advice to you on that is to take a decent variety of classes. Say you take macroeconomics and HATE it, then an economics degree definitely isn't the thing for you. But it's not a total waste, since quite a few degree programs require that course. I wouldn't advise dropping out and seeing what you want to do, because then you have to get back into school and get readjusted to the routine, which isn't easy.

How'd I make the switch? I laughed at the morons at orientation when they recommended this, but study in groups. If you've got a friend sitting there giving you a hard time because you're not doing you're reading, it's a lot tougher to goof off. Get to know some classmates in each class. That way if you miss you've got someone to bail you out, and they'll probably make you feel guilty about missing class as well. It's also handy having someone calling you up reminding you that there's a homework assignment due, that way you won't forget. Bounce ideas off of each other. Difficult assignments take a lot less time if you've got multiple viewpoints on it. I just started doing this in this semester, and it's worked wonders for my grades and for my overall attitude.

Sorry about all the rambling, but I know college is tough and I hope that you can benefit from my mistakes. To put it bluntly, my advice is to buckle down, work hard, take whatever they give you, and get that degree. You'll thank yourself later.

lol... we can have alcohol as early as 19 in Canada....~!

    hey Sephiroth ...
Thx for your advice... I Truly understand your point....
having buddies to study with you is great and it's encourage you to study harder since you want to get a better grade... however... York University is in Toronto and very near my house... so basically i don't live in Residence... My buddies... (very close friend, not study in York but others colleges) are all having da same problem with me except they has less worries cause they know their parent will back them up... my classmates... (we do hang out together but not as much)... are almost same type of person as I am... they lose their direction as well since the major or course is not what they like... but somehow they manage to get GOOD (70-80) grade without studying that much.... one of my high school friend even smoking Weed like Cig everyday... study with weed... eat with weed... sleep with weed... but she manage to get into Waterloo U. for Optical Biologist and having a bright future in Optical Doctor field... so that's what make me think i m stupid... i know i m whinning rite now but i just wanna know HOW can I get back on track....
Honestly... I know i m not stupid but rather smart... but not smart on academic... I wanna ask you guys what is the FIRST thing i must do in order to get back on track.... and I guess non of you think it's a good time to drop-off and start working... rite??

    need your opinions... THX

It sounds like we're all on the same page, here.
I have just stumbled my way throuhg my first collage term after being out of high school for 2 years..... and still managed to fail what was my ONLY academic class.... (I was always so good at math, too )

Now I have doubts about my ability to succeed in school right now, with my life the way it is...
I think I'll have to make some major life adjustments before I have the decipline neccessary to succeed in collage.

I remember when I would float though high school getting great grades and not even do half the homework, yet I would ACE every test.

    I miss those days...

I miss those days as well GM (got-mota? is a pain to type ). Your case is exactly what I was talking about. It's hard to get back into the whole "school rhythm" once you've gotten out of it (or even harder if you never developed one in high school). Shoot, I even take summer courses to keep myself in the rhythm (well, that, and I have a bet with a cousin that I can graduate in four years even ). Passing on that game of UT2K3 in order to read the book gets harder the longer you're out of it.

Chuson, I don't live in a res hall either. I live in a place quite a ways away from campus, all the way across town. It can be a real pain in the rear to study with friends because of that, you just have to be that much more outgoing (I know, I know, that's easier said than done). Some classes aren't going to come naturally and you're going to have to have help (I sure am learning that in my differential equations course this semester) or at least someone to kick you in the rear on occasion . Besides, studying feels less like work if you're in a group. I feel almost sick saying this, but networking is part of the game. Sometimes you just have to try and hang around with the people that don't lose their direction so easily. I'm not saying to blow off all of your current friends and find new ones, but it pays to develop study groups in the classes that you need them. If you're in say for example a psychology class, try to find the psych majors. They're going to know the material anyway, and they're probably going to be more focused. In math classes, find the math, physics, or engineering majors. We have to know that stuff after all, so chances are those majors are going to be more focused and less likely to just try to get through the course. College is an experience man, and it doesn't have to be an individual one. We're all learning to play the college game as we go along, some of us just have better luck, that's all

And for the record, I for one don't think that you should drop out and start working. There's plenty of time for work, it's hard to go back later on. I can think of at least one person on these forums that would testify to that.

    Yes, I agree with Seph....
Don't leave school unless you HAVE TO to survive....
If you can keep it up, it will all be worth it in the longrun.

Next term, take less academic classes and try a few you think you would enjoy more.

Anything you can do to stay positive about school will help, IMO.

Maybe a short trip or vacation is in order
A little something to releive some of that stress??

Well, I can't exactly claim to be efficient at studying. I just cut out gaming and sleep and did more of it . But if you have to be efficient, here's some guidelines they gave us at orientation:

    1. Study in a library. If it requires going to campus, do it. Go someplace where you can't fall asleep and there's no easy access to food so that you aren't tempted to take snack breaks. The last part is debatable though, I've studied in cafeterias before and did just fine. That's just a general guideline.

    2. Like I said before, study with friends. Don't need to beat that drum anymore .

    3. OK, this one is kinda tricky since I'm not sure exactly what type of personality you have. The guidelines say to go someplace with minimal distractions. I don't buy that, because I'm the type that if there aren't any distractions, I make my own. So that's personal preference. Bottom line, find an environment that you can focus in.

    4. If it's a math type of deal, pick whatever problems are the hardest for you, and try to do them without the aid of the book or crib notes. If you have to look the methods up, you don't really know how to do the problem. Repeat until you can do the problems without the book.

    5. NOT FROM STUDY GUIDE. Keep plenty of caffeine handy. I make sure there's a case of Mountain Dew Code Red nearby wherever I go . Can't study well if you're fighting to keep your eyes open.

    6. Also not from the study guide. KNOW WHEN TO QUIT. I don't know how many nights I've stayed up without sleep, essentially beating my head up against the wall trying to get homework finished, and not getting it done anyway. Some things just don't click right away. If you're getting frustrated, take a breather, then come back later and try again. If that doesn't work, get help on it. Or as I've had happen so many times, sometime later someone will say something that makes everything click. Annoying, but it does happen. Sometimes they aren't talking about anything that even resembles what you're studying

OK, the rest of the stuff in their study guide I know from experience is bull, so I'm not going to type it up here. Bottom line is that every one is different, and what works for me may not work for you. Experiment, find out what works. Since you fall asleep while studying, apparently what you did in the past doesn't work. Try something different. ANYTHING. If that doesn't work, try something else. You'll find a study methodology that works eventually.

If you want to keep things fresh, vary your schedule somewhat. Last semester I was bogged down with math and science classes, it was a living Hades for a while there. Every night, same garbage. May be different types of math problems, but they were all math problems. This semester I enrolled in a sociology class to meet my general education requirements. That class is great because it breaks up the monotony of my other classes. Also, you can get a feel for which classes are going to require a ton of studying and homework and which ones are mainly just in-class stuff. I messed up and took too insanely homework-intensive courses this semester, and I'm paying for it. To avoid making that mistake, you pretty much have to find people that have taken the course in the past. I was enrolled in 14 hours last semester and I'm enrolled in 14 hours this semester, but I'm a lot busier this semester than I was last semester. It's not all cut-and-dried, some classes will require more work than others even if they're worth the same amount of credit.

I'm of the same opinion. It's really hard to study if all you can think is "this sucks, I wish I were somewhere else doing something else" or wishing you were plastered or something . I feel like such a dweeb saying this since I normally preach objectivity, but to keep your head in the game you have to stay positive. That's one reason why studying in groups helps.
