Thanks for the hospitality. I been busy and haven't been able to come around as much. But here I am now.

chuson1, I'd recommend taking a year off to see what you really want to do. If not, you'll be unhappy in school. School works for me, only when I know it is serving a purpose. It may be the same for you, and doing something that is leading towards your goals may help you stay focused.

Doing something that you feel good at and like doing is the best feeling in the world. Doing something that you don't like is the worst. It's common sense for the most part. I got through High School doing the little that I did like. A.P. and Honor classes got me through for the most part, I liked the challenge.

    hey Sephiroth...
    thx for da guidelines...
so da bottomline of da guideline is study in some place with minimal distractions rite? I like Library but it's TOO quiet and too far from outdoor... (i need to smoke)... i know studying in quiet place will be good but somehow i can't manage it.. .even if I study in quiet place... i will get my ear plugged and the music will start flowing from my MD... or if study @ home... mp3 from my comp... my mom always said "WTF? listen to da music while study??" ... then she force me to turn off the comp and study... but once there's no sound... i fall asleep ....
it seems that in order to get good grade in school da only thing is stay away from the world... no distraction and things like that... but seriously... i like crowd.. the more crowded .. the more noisy.. it's better..... i don't know why....
anyways... i will start to do some research on HOW TO STUDY on the internet now.... since all my study method are B.S... thx for all ya help~! ....

    hey nub...

if get a Satisfic job this day is that easy.... i will drop-out of school in 2 sec and grab a job.... but nowadays... it's REALLY hard to find a job....... so that's what make me confused....

Actually Chuson, I listen to heavy metal when I study. Mostly 80's metal, some Tool, Deftones, White Zombie, that type of stuff. Helps me focus. All has to do with creating enough of an ambient distraction that I won't create my own distractions. Quiet doesn't necessarily mean silent, it's just typically not a good idea to study in a place where people are talking and you'll be paying more attention to the conversation than your study material.

I actually had the best luck studying in the cafeteria of a sorority house. I wasn't what you'd call efficient at the time, but I did get the job done and aced the test the next day. There were plenty of distractions (ambient conversation, caffeine runs, the hot girl across the table from me) and it took four hours to get two hours worth of studying done, but it's not like I needed the sleep anyway. Bottom line is, if the standard guidelines don't work for you, don't follow them. They don't really work for me either.

I have to second what Sephiroth said.

Do whatever it takes to make the studying tolerable. The main point is that you do it, not that you obsess on the material 8 hours a day. Get a comfortable setting, keep smokes and drinks nearby, etc....background music is fine...jamming is out.

I have terrible study habits, but just sitting down with the books is half the battle. If I can pull A's and B's anybody can

Dang SpeedBump, you put it perfectly there. I've been blabbering for days and still couldn't say it nearly that well . Yeah, like he said, make it tolerable first, then productive. You can't get anything done if you fall asleep or quit before you ever really get started.

I have more trouble motivating myself than anything else. Engineering classes are not easy, and I have fallen prey to the "I'll never get it so why bother trying" mentality before. My problem is that I REFUSE to flunk a class, so all that screwing around just makes the last third of the semester hell. I did get a C once, but it won't happen again. I'm paying out the *** for this knowledge, and I plan to get it.

Any college course can be passed simply by forcing yourself to do the reading, doing the homework regardless of what everyone else is doing, and following Seph's good advice Beyond that, make sure the professor knows you are trying, and be sure to ask them to explain the things you are having trouble with. Personal contact with the prof is good for at least a letter grade bump (ask anyone who has been there).

Believe me, I am the king of screwoffs. I'm just now going back to Purdue to finish my BS degree since the job market sucks. I'm 31.

Oh well, enough motivational speaking for one day.

Engineering courses eh? What type of classes are you in? I'm a computer engineering major myself, those electrical classes make my head spin. It's great when you finally make the connection and everything comes together in those engineering classes isn't it? Sometimes those "AHA!" moments take awhile, but they sure feel good.

is not easy... my class has like 200+ students.... so..... but after 2 months... my class has only 40-60 students attend to the class ... some drop.. and some just skip the class...

That's exactly what it's like here Chuson. I've gone through entire courses without even learning the prof's name. If I don't even know the prof, then the chances of the prof knowing me are near zero. Some students stick around after class to kiss up, but the prof's don't remember them anyway. It's kind of funny, some of them get so frustrated by that

The prof always puts an e-mail or telephone # on the syllabus. Use it. Kissing up never hurt anyone. Out of those 200+ students, that prof needs to think you are trying harder than all of them, regardless of what your grade is. Trust me.

    Seph,

I'm a Electrical Engineering Technology major at Purdue. I've already done the Calculus, now I just have to apply it. I'm not a math person, so that was the toughest part for me. That's the only reason I didn't go straight EE (more calculus). Now that I have it done it wasn't that bad

Yeah, but certain profs just ignore those that kiss up. Some of them act like just doing a lecture is enough of a hassle, and actually talking with students is just going too far. Besides that, more often than not your papers and tests are graded by a bunch of grad students that you never meet anyway. Sometimes getting to know the prof doesn't do you any good whatsoever. Just my experience though, perhaps yours is different

I almost transferred to a school in Kansas City and got a Computer Engineering Technology degree rather than the Computer Engineering degree I'm working on now. A few friends ended up talking me out of it. What exactly is the difference between straight EE and EE Technology?

Calculus... I miss calculus. It's less abstract than this differential equations stuff I'm doing now, I could actually figure out calculus. I am what you'd call a math person, until you get into the theory and all that stuff. That's where the networking comes in handy, I've got to find people who can explain all that theory when I don't get it
