    Problem with cable

My cable line is split six times before it reaches my modem, and as a result the signal is so weak my modem loses the connection all the time and I have to reset it. Is there any kind of booster I can put on the line to avoid this problem so I don't have to have a cable guy come and run a new line to the modem?

comcast had to bring a new hookup from the end of the street for my cable modem to sink. it has its own line that runs in to a differnt part of the house then the TV cable.

    5) NO PR0N. Please, no pornographic material nor pointers to it. For those that don’t know what PR0N stands for, switch the “R” and “0” around and you will understand.

    randy989,

Yes there are boosters that the cable company can provide. When I moved to my home about 2 years ago, and Charter did the installation, they suggested that I would need a booster for signal quality since I had so many connections. They did the initial installation, and then after testing the signal quality, they said I would need a booster to increase the signal since I have so many TV connections plus cable internet.

If I remeber correctly, the installation and booster cost around $75.00. Just don't quote me on that because it was some time ago. I have not taken a look at the booster in a long time, but I do remeber it just plugs into a wall eletrical outlet directly behind my computer. It has accidentally got disconnected by my dogs before, and when this happens it effects the signal quality to the TV's, and it is very noticeable. When the cable technician first installed the booster, he demonstrated the effect it had at all of my TV connections, and he also explained why my cable internet connection would be better, but I don't remember the details.

It was up to me whether I wanted the booster or not. The technician said it was my choice, but also said that my connections would be a lot better, and he proved that to me by just looking at the video quality of the various TV's around the house. You know how it is these days. Everybody has to have their own TV to watch their favorite program plus cable net to frag on. SS

I just took a look at the booster behind my computer. I do not know how the connections look under the house because I have not looked at them.

There are two seperate cable lines behind my puter. One hooks directly to the modem. The other one is plugged into the booster and the booster is plugged into an AC outlet. The booster has no cable out connection--just one cable coming in.

Based on this setup, I am assuming the technician just came off of the main splitter with a seperate cable for the booster. This in turn boosts the signal to all connections. The booster is labeled Ancon--made in China--that figures

Here are some links for Motorola boosters, but I cannot verify that the Motorola boosters work because I have never owned one, but I bet they will work extremely well. The Ancon I have works like it is supposed to do. I would put my money on the Motorola--about $50.00 or so. On the first link that I provided, look at the installation guide on that web page. I can not link the guide because it is a pop up window. You will be able to hook up the Motorola booster in minutes without any tools.

Here is an example price of the Motorola booster. You can do a little price searching. http://www.provantage.com/buy-220720...r-shopping.htm

Deal Time and Price Watch will have them listed, so you can search for the cheapest price. Who knows? Your local Best Buy may stock them. SS

Okay, thanks for the suggestions. I really do not want to plug in yet another thing behind my computer if I don't have to (I already have sixteen things off of one outlet), so I think if the problems persist often enough I'll just have a Comcast tech come and run a new line from the first split. The only that makes me think that is NOT the issue is that it was losing the connection at even intervals. It was set up 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Exactly twelve hours later, it went out. At the time, I didn't know that was the problem, so I waited for it to come back on. By Monday morning at 6:30, it was still not back, so I called Comcast. Then he told me all I had to do was reset my modem. So I did. Exactly twelve hours later at 6:30 in the evening, it went out again. I reset the modem and it was fine fifteen seconds or so later. So, how could the cable line be the problem if it happens at regular intervals?

Also, I fully expected it to go out again at 6:30 or so this morning (twelve hours from 6:30 Monday evening), but it did not. Right now it's almost 4 p.m. here and it's still working, so I guess we'll see. Hopefully it won't happen anymore.
