    Ever been "DEAD" before?

today was the friday before prom for my school, and for many years niow we've had grim reaper day the day before prom.

a select group of seniors are selected to be "dead" for the day, the number represeants that number of kids killed every year in car accidents over prom and graduation.

each student thats chosen is given a black t-shirt that says "Grim Reaper" on the front, and has a message about not drinking during prom on the back. the students recieve the t-shirt during one of their 7 periods throughout the day. from the moment you put on your tishirt you are dead to everyone. you can not speak or communicate with anyone throught the remainder of the day.

then finally 5 minutes before the releasing bell all the dead kids join in the main foier and we all stand in static positions with emotionless faces. when the bell ruings we remain still until all the other kids have left, you are not to move for anyone, you are not to talk to anyone, you just stand there.

it's very spooky, keeping from talking all day is tough too. kids were tapping me on the back in the hall, trying to get me to smile, and woodshop was the worst of all. i knew it would be, but i didn't speak. i did end up with 2 titty twisters, some paoper balls thrown at me, kids calling me names, you know, the usual, except i couldn't get them back.

rest assured, i will reap my revenge on tuesday, monday is an unnoficial holiday for us seniors, well most of us. call me a bleep bleep bleep and see what happens.

anyhow the juniors also see a mock car crash with a helicopter coming in to do an airlift, ambulances, squad cars, the corroner, some bloody seniors in prom attire, and just the total destruction of 2 cars via the fake accident and the infamous jaws of life. almost makes me want to be a junior again.

all in all both experiences impacted me at least a little, i don't drink much anyhow, and i'll be darned if i do it and drive, or get into a car with someone else who has.

just thought i'd tell you guys how we do in A-Town.

My school did the dead kids thing, though IIRC it was not before prom. They did soem pretty elaborate costumes, all in black and everyone wore white paint and didn't talk. No car crash though, that woulda been cool.

Something neat our school did do was a very lightly supervised after prom lock-in. Kids who typically had parental curfews were usually allowed to stay overnight. A lot of people brought big stereos, food and drinks (non-alchoholic), games and stuff. The parents loved it because we weren't getting drunk and killed in an accident, and the kids loved it because we got to tear up the school. Not break stuff, but leave messes, people raced skateboards down the halls and rollerbladed all night, stuff like that. They even had a room of guys playing RPG's and the cafe tables were full of Magic:TG players.

Good time, but if I could do it all again I probably would organize a massive miniatures wargame. Warhammer 40k or Clan War, maybe Marvel Superheroes. The cafateria tables are perfect for that kinda stuff.

oiur school picked people at random, i would never voluntarily get myself involved in something like that, glad i did it though, i could have opted out.

anyhow it was cool. i myself am not attending prom, not t0o make a statement, or becuase i couldn't get a date, but i just don't get into dances all that much, and i hate being in public places with a ton of people, even if i do know a lot of them.

my school is large, the senior class is 6-700 kids, plus the juniors sophomores and freshman.

i may regret it later on, or maybe i wont.

    that was disturbing.

of course it wasn't mandatory, and why wouldn't you have done it? are you against not being able to drive under the influence? or is it because you'd be afraid of peer pressure?

There's a city south of here that's not letting the kids drive themselves to the prom. The school is getting charter busses and limos for every student attending the prom.

I'm guessing don't want kids driving themselves in the dead of night since they probably already know that some are gonna get drunk and the school cannot do anything about it. The location of their prom involves going through a section of highway here that's notorious for accidents between their home city and the city their prom is held.

If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

I wouldnt want the school to tell me what to do, im not saying im not against drunk driving, I agree what your school is doing, ecept I think it should be volantary. Im sure some kids would want to do it, and not be chosin.

me thinks me should explain this a 3rd time for you.

it is not mandatory, meaning you do not have to do it. the list of seniors is picked at random yes, then if you decide to participate you fill out a form and hand it in to the teacher thats heading the whole thing. if you don't want to participate you don't return the form, plain and simple. filling out the form requires your class schedule, if they don't have that they can't find you to give you a shirt.

are you like that lady who sued mcy d's for having hot coffee? anything you can find to rebel against, or sue for, you jump at it?
