I would heed the suggestion from exorcist on the latest driver improving things.Originally posted by jei
Hi again.
Nino;
A big YES to all your q's.
And to all out there;
I'm thinkin.... what is the purpose of this selfinflictive frustration. What god damn reason could anyone with less than four drives have to go for ATA100?
Can anyone tell me this???????
HDD Bencmarks are unaffected! The boot time is horrible! It is just another f...... driver to update, and for no reasen at ALL!!!
sqz my french.

As far as performance you will see improvement.
sandra benchmarks for ata66 drives are around 16000.
I saw sandra benchmarks for ata100 at around 20000.
The bus rate has gone up from ata to ata66 to ata100.
Get past the boot problems. Put your fast stuff on ata100 and use ata66 for your slower stuff.
Stuff is a technical term

Thanks guys.
I'm gonna try out the different advices to see if I can get some improvement to my system.
The greatest disappointment have to be that det HDD benchmarks remains the same in ATA100 as in ATA66 modus. It is obvious that the communication speed is not yet restricted by ATA66. I guess we just have to wait for faster drives to see any difference!?

Dancin_bear;
I didn't see your last post before posting myself.
But it doesn't change anything. My Sandra Sisoft 2001 benchmarks are just the same in ATA66/ATA100 mode.
Just above 18300.

I need to look at your config again.Originally posted by jei

If you have a ata100 drive on the ata100 controller, then you will see the improvement.
If by chance you also placed an ata66 drive on the same bus then the bus will step down to ata66.
Place your ata100 drive on the primary by itself with nothing else.
Then do Sandra.
I also found the thread talking about results with Sandra on ata100 below

Dancin Bear ---
Are you saying that if I put a second hard drive (a slave) on the same cable that my ATA 100 is connected to and put that in the primary ATA 100 slot of the mobo that both drives will run at the slower speed?

I should have thought a little bit more before I posted. More questions. If I have a cd and cdrw on the ATA 66 inputs of the mobo, where would I put my second hard drive? One last -- How can I tell if the drive is really running at 100?

If your second hard drive is not an ata100 but an ata66 then the entire bus steps down to ata66 operation.Originally posted by rmac

If you put a cd-rom there it steps down to ata66 and maybe lower.
The only thing I am aware that runs ata100 at this time are the newer hard drives. But, again if you want ata100 performance on a primary or secondary then you must only have ata100 on that ribbon cable.
Hope this helps.
I am getting ready to put an ata100 drive in my config.
And believe me I am going to read all the posts again. A lot of good advice to read. I assure you when I do it will be the only device on the ribbon cable for starts. I will probably keep it that way especially when you can buy up to 80gb in a single hard drive.
Now if you want raid a7v didn't do it. There are mb's that do that. Look around at anandtech.com, tomshardware.com, etc. for recommendations and reviews on that.

Got it Dancin_Bear. Thanks. I might see what I can do about realigning the cable ribbon.

Just disable the the ATA100 and use the ATA66 ide ports you will boot much faster and will only loose 5% of your harddrive speed . BTW most ATA100 drives only run @ 55 or so anyway . Lets just wait for them to get the bugs worked out

I only have this long delay at boot up after upgrading the BIOS from 1004c to 1005a. Seems the way you assign boot devices changed in the newer BIOS - don't know if that is part of the problem.
My system also includes a Promise UDMA100 Raid controller.

Ex0rcist is correct: The new Promise drivers slow down boot time. I went back to b25 and everything works fine now.
So, to recap, you can use your ATA/100 as the boot device so long as you have the Promiseb25 driver disk handy for Windows setup. Use this in Windows as well.

Buy a a7pro and forget the ata 100, for what it's worth.
I am definitely saving this thread.Originally posted by Teej

Thanks for all the info.
I will be working closely with these posts and others on ata100

Under the device Manager, I do have Version 1.60 (build 25) for Win200 promise Ultra100(tm) IDE controller(PDC20265)
but when computer boots up it says "Ultra 100(tm) Bio Version 2.01 (build 28)". Are they saying different things?
Am I missing something?
Thanks.
