    dual channel = single channel

on a nforce2ultra400 board, dual channel performs better than single channel because it gives more bandwidth.

but since athlonxp's dont need a lot of bandwidth (especially nforce2 non-igp), could i just oc fsb and get the same result as dual channel with one dimm?

this way i can save money because one 512dimm is cheaper than two 256dimm. and later i have the option to put another 512dimm to enable dual channel. if i had 2x256, ill be in odd position when upgrading ram later.

sure i could oc with 2 dimms. but maybe 1 dimm oc better than 2 dimm. is that right?

If you can increase FSB by aprox 5 with only one stick of memory versus two, you will get near equal performance. One stick of memory will usually overclock better than two, and single side memory will overclock better than double sided memory

i didnt know that single sided mem oc better than double. i was going for corsair xms 3200c2 but maybe ill get a single side ram.

so my plan is to get a single side ram and oc at least 6fsb. probably around 220.

    thx.

I can't tell a difference in the max on fsb w/ DC or SC. They are the same as far as I can tell. I can reach 230 either way. I'm sure it's my vdd holding me back though.
