WD Raptor, ASUS A7N8X, onboard Si3112 corruption?

    Hey Everyone,

Forgive if this has been sorted out already as I havent read around here in a while, but I may be planning on getting 1 or 2 Raptors to connect the the onboard SATA controller. I have seen a lot of posts concerning corruption. Has this SATA corruption issue been fixed yet, or will I need more hardware to avoid it. Are there any advantages to using one WD Raptor over two in terms of avoiding corruption. I use linux occasionally, and would like it to operate without problems, even if it is installed on another PATA IDE drive in a dual boot senario.

The system is currently working perfectly as is. I am contemplating installing the 1004Uber BIOS with enhanced SATA BIOS.

    Is this necessary?

Is it possible that I will still encounter corruption after flashing to this BIOS and using the .29 driver?

Any suggestions to have this working without much trouble if the situation above occurs?

Any common fixes that I may not be aware of?

    Any suggestions/comments welcome.

    Thanks

You should have no problems with corruption. Some people have still reported issues but this could be hardware compatability issues with adapters and unstable systems.

You can also get corruption by running a unstable system. Meaning if you overclock and consider a 5 minute burn in as good enough, you may have issues. This doesn't mean not to overclock but ensure that you get no errors from Memtest86 and Prime 95. If you are stable you should have zero issues. Not sure which OS you are using, but problems may take longer to show up with 2000 and XP.

The Uber BIOS does have the newer version of the SATA BIOS. Both seem to work fine. Most people do run with the uber BIOS but either one you use has corrected corruption issues.

The .29 and .33 drivers perform the best. The .32 driver is more of the official driver. The performance appears just slightly lower. A few points on a benchmark if that is what your concerned with. It performs very well, I use it. There may have been issues with the other drivers and although I have run all three drivers, I would recommend the .32 driver over the others.

I have been curious about runnig Linux with the Raptors but haven't had a chance to try.

I'm sure you will like the performance.

    Thanks TonyInSeattle,

I will look forward to getting them, maybe near the end of this month. If I get linux working with them, I will post back saying how it went.

Thanks for the link themortarman, there is a lot of useful info there.

btw, this is a little off topic, but I was curious, did your 2500+ give much resistance overclocking to 2121Mhz, do you think you could have done it on stock cooling. I am using a sk-6 and AS2 with a 5500 RPM fan and wanted to reach 3200+ or at least 2800+ with a 2500+, do u think this would be possible or should I just get a 2800+.

    Thanx

The barton cores run a bit cooler then the t-breds. Some are having no problems hitting 200 fsb with stock v-core. I am having to up mine to 1.75 which means more heat. So yes, you may be able to get to 200 fsb with your cooler setup. One thing that may hold you back is the memory in you sig.

Had the same thing with my 2500. Had to run it at 1.75 to be stable at 200.

Well I had 0 luck running the SATA RAID with an Audigy 2 or 1. Data corruption was a daily event and the RAID continually had to be rebuilt(200+ GB takes a few hours...not fun). Removing the Audigy and installing the Hercules F3 Digital cured my corruption issues. Been happy with it since last December and 0 issues now. GL

They both seem to run about the same to me. Results may vary I guess...lol

A bit odd for an Audigy to be giving you issues, I've never been fond of creative software though.

Thanks for all the input, this is now strange, anyone else with an Audigy2 and corruption. Strange enough I had that problem with my old Live! MP3+ and the via ide controller on my KR7A-RAID with one particular creative driver. Well, I don't plan on ditching the Audigy2 so I might have a problem.

    Anymore comments welcome.
