    Notebook Overheats!

I own a vaio and it suffers from serious overheating problems. Both my other systems are down now..so the laptop is getting used plently now.

After about an hour of running some intensive programs, I lost display and 5 secs later it was completely off.. It was very hot before it shut off itself. I turned it back on and it was hotter than before. This has happened three times now. If you put your nose close up the notebook, you almost could smell the slighty burnt (or singed) plastic..

I'd ignore it but i can't, especially having to use the keyboard and you feel how hot the keys are.

First taught was..FANS..i need fans...I grabbed an old room fan and set up it right along side where i got the notebook. Only thing is that my hands and fingers kinda feel numb from all the cool air being blown at them at high speed all the time.

I'm thinking i'm gonna take it apart and check for dust clogging up anywhere inside.
Besides that any other thing i could probably try?

You need to create airflow UNDER the system. Best way to do this is to raise it up just a couple of inches. I suggest about 3 CD cases in height. That's close to 1.5 inches.

Get 12 of them (for 4 corners). And stack it like this:

The above will give the most airflow possible under the laptop and also keep the cases out of your way for typing and so on.

No problemo... might also help to force some air under there... maybe have the fan just barely on the level of the desk so that air is sliding across the surface of the desk (but not over the level of the keyboard so your fingers don't freeze)... if you do this, take a look at your laptop case and make sure you aren't using said fan to force air IN the exhaust vents that may be on the side of the case.

edit/ oh, and sorry my Paint Shop Pro skills aren't all that great

    Alright.

You know those "white things" that come in boxes with stuff like monitors, electronics, etc.. ( i forgot what it was called.)

I might cut out four 2inch high square pieces to be used instead of the cds..How's that sound? I'm away from home for the next week or so i don't have that much cd cases here.

I assume you are talking about styrofoam... that would do nicely (although it can be messy if it flakes)... should work well

Thanks for the post. I to have a viao. It does get hot though I do not encounter the problems you are having. Though I am going to make me a nice little riser for the lappy toppy. Better safe then not having a working laptop......

I would check to make sure the heatpipe is getting hot. It sounds like it might not be working, therefore, your case is taking the heat instead of the pipe. It is a newer vaio? I guess I should have asked that before I jumped to assuming it had a heat pipe for the processor. Also, do raise the bottom of the laptop. If you have a removable CD drive and are not using it take that out too. You can also remove the battery to keep heat down.

    Ok

I cut out the styrofoam standoffs..And i got a fan that blows less air.

Keyboard & pad area doesn't heat up like before..and i haven't gotten any shut downs yet.

I haven't got around to opening it yet. It's a newer vaio..(i think) It's a V505a. I think they got later versions. I'll try your suggestion liquidsoul.

I've been using one of these for my Pavillion:

Runs off an available USB port and has a pass-through so you don't lose the port. Works purty darn slick and not all that noisy either.

Or you can buy one of those laptop coolers like the one from Antec. I haven't tried one yet since I don't use my laptop as often as I use to, but it looks interesting.
