Barcelona is the basic reason I bought in..... Plus the stock was a good buy at $13.40.

I'd like to see $25 eventually!

Got email from distributor asking if we're ready to spec out barcelona systems for delivery in September. Was hoping earlier but we'll take em when we can get them. 32-way boxes here we come!

Ya really. Intel Quad cores are by design a bit of a disappointment.

...compared to? Intel Quad Cores have been available. Right now they are plentiful and cheap. They absolutely SMOKE anything else out there for multi-threaded apps. The paperwork says there is a bottleneck at the shared memory lane, but even WITH that, they are the fastest thing out there.

AMD's chips will be more elegant in design... but in order to make a profit they have to be faster in action per dollar than the competition. We'll see... but Intel has had Quad to itself for months. Not much of a disappointment there...

Keep in mind that I'm an AMD Fan-Boy... 8086, K-3, Athlon, XP, XPM... I don't LIKE seeing AMD so far behind. But I'm looking at getting a Q6600 Quad Core as my next Photoshop Beast because it is the fastest thing out there for the buck. AMD will have to make some serious noise about price/performance before I put a hold on that plan 'nStuff.

Hi Fluff, you got me. Quad core is a disappointment against the future amd barcelona. I'm comparing the present with the future that is not there yet. AMD is in a bind because it needs to release a quad core on-par with intel, and at a price intel has set in the market. That cannot be good.

You're going to be happy with Q6600 for Photoshop. It will fly, especially lightroom. $300Cdn for Q6600. Unheard of when quad was released, but the reality is for prices to be where they are.

Will you get RAID0? Raptor? Ah, another question for another thread!!

    Re: amd stock......

Sorry about the tone of the post.. I WANT to get an AMD quad... but so far I don't even know how fast it's going to be, or how much it's going to cost or when it will be commonly available. A few teaser articles, but so far that's it. The realist in me sees that as an indication that the early AMD quads will be maybe a tad faster, but a lot more expensive.

We're still waiting for that killer app which will NEED a good iteration of a quad core... so far there isn't much that can USE it, much less NEEDS it beyond the few folks who need to render 3D environments from scratch.

I WANT an AMD quad core system... but I NEED my system soon!

( I have a RAID 5 storage box for archiving, but no RAID on the main system. I'll use a big drive for the main stuff, but I'm thinking about a little raptor to use as my Photoshop 'scratchpad' drive 'nStuff. )

    Re: amd stock......

I am scratching my head wondering why AMD's barcelona won't be better than intel if they have onboard memory? I read that it's harder to produce..so intel's northbridge memory is easier and let them come out in front.

So, now it is November. What's next?

AMD's ATi is coming out with the HD38xx Graphics card. It won't be as good as NVidia's 8800gt, but it will be cheaper. *** Nov 19.
    Any bullish bet for AMD?

So, Fluff, did you end up getting a new system? i can't remember if you said so on another thread...

    Re: amd stock......

Fluff has a intel quad.... and seems to be quite happy with it....

I am still on the fence as to what my next purchase may be....

Saw some Penryn's at 4ghz.... Likely to see some overclocks even higher than that.

In order for AMD to be competitive, they need some high speed Barcelona's, and at this point, just don't have them..... I also believe the "on chip" memory controller makes the quad a little harder to overclock, but this is simply an opinion here, since i don't have one.....

One thing for sure, the days of single core chips are numbered.....

    Re: amd stock......

T's right... I got a Quad 6600 a few months ago. Quick as heck at crunching... and no waiting for it to run a filter over a large image file in Photoshop, which was the real reason I wanted it. I'm processing .cr2 (raw) files that are 12MB in size each... and when I run an HDR compression, I might be using six of those at once! It really does take some real 'crunch' to pull that off without long waits 'nStuff.

I like AMD, I would have preferred to stick with AMD... this is my first Intel machine. But vaporware just won't WORK for me, ya know?

I think AMD is trying to come up with a Video Chip on the CPU in order to remove the whole bus chokepoint completely. With multi-core technology, is there any reason to make all the cores CPU? If they can pull that off, they've got a leg up on Intel, and a reason to run behind them for a year or so... but it's only a hunch.

I have no idea at all what the stock is gonna do... none.

Poor AMD is in the 6's now.
INTC corrected in a bad way. Peaked at 27ish and is now in the 22 range. ISM (measure of activity in supply) declined, and a bunch of analysts are calling for a decline in the demand for semi's.

I'm watching AMD, and its barcelona/tri-core/ATi progress. AMD can't go down forever, but it can, in theory go to zero (like any other stock).

    Re: amd stock......

Bump. 5 months later, I am on the camp that AMD's GPU line may finally be rightly balanced to compete with Nvidia: HD4870 is cheaper than the GX 280 so it should sell well. The HD4850 should capture the mainstream.

Generally speaking, going long on stocks is a losing proposition: all stocks are falling! But AMD might stay @ 6.

    crispy, good to see you...

I am still holding some shares I bought at $12, but I do agree that ATI/AMD are finally hitting their stride. At least moving forward, the graphics division can pull theIr weight.

If not for the Barcelona errata debacle, things could be much more positive.....

Not much room for error for AMD moving forward.....

    Agreed.
I am convinced that AMD is one of the main reason that NVDA faltered today. NV fell $5 today.

I'll continue to watch AMD. I might feature it here on my blog:

I'm also in the camp that nvidia went down do to the AMD video cards. Ha, although, I need AMD to get back to $23 for me to break even.

I'm also glad to see AMDs' video team releasing more optimizations for their Linux drivers.
