How Do *YOU* Install Your New Cats??

You know for years now, even though all my installs have gone well (afaik) I have always wondered just what is the most "standard" way of un-installing and re-installing new video drivers.

I just d/led the new Cat 3.8's and I did it a slightly diff way this time. (I know of at least 3 websites that each have a diff way you should uninstall and reinstall vid drivers)

Anyway, I went into my add/remove programs and deleted the ATi drivers. On top of that I then went into my program files and removed the ATi dir. I then also went into my registry and removed any mention of ATi.

I then rebooted and installed the 3.8's Everything sure looks fine, and my FPS are great in the 1 game I have tested...the only thing I see different from the usual way I do it...Is now under my C: dir there is a folder called ATi and in it "Support". What is that and why is it there?

All the other versions of Cats I have ever installed were put in the folder C:/ProgramFiles ATi.

So on top of answering this for me, if you could all just tell me "Exactally" how it is you all do the unistall, and reinstall, I would Really appreciate it.

    Thank you

Uninstalled drivers, rebooted in Safe mode, used a driver cleaner to remove files then installed a generic pci card, rebooted and installed cat 3.8

    Everything is fine.

Took a chance and just installed 'on-top'. Had normal Catalyst 3.7s and no '3rd party software' like e.g. Radeonator, Rage3d, Omegas, etc. installed, and everything seems fine.

uninstalled ati driver and ati control panel in add/remove

then booted to safe mode used a driver cleaner

    then installed new drivers

so far so good although my score in 3dmark2001se went down by ~300 marks but i'm sure thats due to my drive need defragged and other misc stuff.

not sure i really care for the new layout of the ati control panel will take some time to get used to.

i just run it on top of the old one. that ati directory is the driver install files...they can be deleted.

ati designed it so you could update without uninstalling.

disabled my LAN connection, removed ATI display driver, then ati control panel, rebooted into safe mode, cancelled auto install hardware wizard, ran cab claner on driver.cab and sp1.cab, ran driver claner and cleaned out ATI, and all other ATI related files. Rebooted into windows, cancelled auto install wizard, and then double clicked and installed new cats.

ATi drivers generally don't need to be uninstalled - just add the new ones over the top. The problems occur when changing chip manufacturers - ATi to nVidia or vice versa.

You shouldn't. It's just that you don't actually need to remove the old ones. I've benched over-installs against a completely new install after a format and I can't detect any performance diff.

that's the temporary folder used by the installation files to extract its content. the setup.exe runs from that folder.
after all setup, it's safe to delete those folders.

anyway, my procedure is pretty straight forward.
goto control panel, remove AIT control panel, click NO to restart, remove ATI drivers, click YES to restart.
after restart, install ATI drivers, click NO to restart, install ATI Control Panel, click YES to restart.

So basically, I had two restarts when upgrading catalyst drivers.
It's been like that since I had my radeon 8500..

I once tried the 'rough' way of going to safe mode, deleting registry entries, and deleting all ati*.* files in the system folders. Results is the same, so never like that again.

My opinion is, going to safe mode, etc is the best way to install if you experienced problems. Why choose the hard way, if we can just click - remove - and install ??

That advice from nub nub has worked for all the Cat series drivers, unlike the old its not a problem.
