I cringe every time I take my G4 off of my X2. I know it's on with a good mount cause I've got a suction seal, and you can see that I have good coverage with the thermal paste cause it's semi-transparent and there are little peaks everywhere where the thermal paste has pulled apart. But I have to apply so much force to get the waterblock off. It scares me every time.

I know, and the north and south bridge chips are delicate because they are BGA packages mounted by pressure-sensitive adhesive. Just flexing the board under the chips is enough to ruin a board without the slightest visible trace of damage.

Phew! Back to PCI-E slot 2, and the system has video again. Something horribly wrong with the chipset fan tho. Makes grinding noises at higher RPM. At least I know now that it's not a dead MB.

BGA's a solder-down. The Ball Grid Array is manufactured with so-called solder "balls" if flexing kills a board, chances are you've cracked the solder or broken a trace in the package itself.

The stock chipset fans have allways been a pathetic joke for me. Damn good to hear the board is ok though!

I agree, but there's practically nothing that will fit that board configuration. With the ATI silencer, there's not really any room for anything else.

Silencers do take a lot of room. I know. Chances are the rig will run just fine without the chipset coolers, unless yer overclocking. But even then, good airflow through the case should be enough.

Looks like my chipset is ok afterall. But I still don't know how to get video working in slot 4.
