Well we have my new rig up and running.

Need to update my signature and then report my new ghz, but only after we get some amount of overclocking going.

I have my new opteron 170 running at stock speed.

Still need to add second 512mb memory stick. I had some trouble.

Maybe I just didn't seat it properly.

We will see, but right now I am going to let it run

    Re: Folding Frogs Crap thread!

    Noorman,

My new rig was running folding under Windows/xp for about 5-6 days before I switched over to LINUX.

    No problems.

So yes at this point it is stable.

I have completed 3 WUs under LINUX without a problem; another did EUE after 68%.

But then two more after that were fine.

I have run prime on this for about three hours no problems and now I am at 2.4ghz, which doesn't even get close to the limits of the Opteron 170.

I tend to not go for the all out limit. I stay back.

I am going to run some more tests when I crank this up to 2.5 ghz, perhaps tomorrow and perform a lengthy test as Jester recommends. I am also going to run another program that he recommended besides Prime95.

But the true test is successful runs with folding.

The other thing going for us as you well know is the smp client runs between 80-90% not 100%.

My temps on my cpu at 2.4ghz under windows/xp going all out with prime reached 50c; so that is fine.

The Opteron 170 ships with a much nicer HSF. It has heat pipes, copper , etc., seems to be doing just fine in the cooling category.

    Thanks for the question.

    thanks DBear,

on another point: I need to warn you about the reported CPU usage; seems other WU's do 'better' on that.
When I was running that p3023 yesterday, I looked again (via 'top') at the CPU usage of the 4 Cores; it was higher ...
I thought I 'd written them down: it was around 90% for 1 and around 80-85 for the other, while previously I had marked just over 80% for1 and ~71.5% for the other !

Anyway, if your rig has been running with 2x Gromacs in XP, it ought to be stable !

    no worries there !

Concerning the new Opteron: their HSF's may be with heatpipes and bigger, but you should test the assembly out carefully and I advise using Arctic product to put it together.

Since I use the hige Zalman 9500 (heatpipes and full-copper flower fins), I have knowledge of heat dissipation from a dual core racing at 2x 100%.
I could easily weather a hot summer, but I doubt if I could have done that with the OEM HSF that AMD supplies its Opterons ...

I have the Zalman on this rig; my main Windows rig.

I will be watching as summer approaches again.

But for now I will leave it.

The OEM HSF from AMD on my 4200+ x2 ran about 5c higher than the Zalman.

So all in all not that bad.

But I went for the Zalman.

I may do so again, if needed.

Maybe I forgot to say, but the Zalman is on the rig that 's 25% OC'ed, from 2.0 GHz stock to 2.5 GHz ...

I had to up Vcore a bit and all o' that counts for a 'good' heat production 24/7 ( LOL )

For reference, the el cheapo freezer 64 pro knocks 10c+ off the stock non heatpipe coolers temps.

Great budget buy and pretty quiet too

Amen to that. I have one as well. The stock heatpipe cooler that came with my 4400 X2 is very good, too.

    That is not good.
