    Re: Folding Frogs Crap thread!

    Hey folks.

    CRAP!

During the recent passing of the remnants of the first storm of the season, my Internet connection server trashed the HDD holding the OS during shutdown. Wouldn't be recognized. Won't reformat.

In the last month, I've lost two dedicated rig MOBO's due to being plain old (have one ISA slot ).

Upgraded all three MOBO's to inexpensive BioStar K7VIG 400's. The two dedicated rigs have 256MB of Kingston PC2700. The ICS server has 512MB of the HyperX PC2700.

Being the server's also the wifes gaming rig, I through in a Promise FastTRAK TX2000 card with a couple of Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250GB HDDs in a striped RAID deal. Upgrading her mess forced me to include a AMD Sempron 2800+ Thoroughbred OC'ed to a little over 2GHz.

    It's old but cheap technology.

    CRAP!

Now I gotta figure out where to put in the rack her old MOBO and the AMD Duron 1.8 Applebred.

FWIW, at this point, I've replaced seven of the farms PSU's to include active PFC correction.

    Fold on folks!

    Hi BC,

you have had your work cut out there !

Good job bringing it back online !

    Keep it up now !

I repeat this (from a little while back) to try and help you !

If you 're in an area where the protection is that bad, I suggest a home grid surge arrester !

This gives you some info on that subject: http://www.statefarm.com/consumer/v...es/surgprot.htm

I've been using one of these for the entire house. Very beefy outdoor model for use where the mains enter the main breaker box.

    Hey noorman.

Yeah, I've got the power thing covered well with multiple surge arrestors from the meter base on. Independent UPS's for each bank of dedicated rigs (APC 650's) as well as my main, and server rigs (Tripp-Lite 1050). I've an ample back-up generator if things look long winded (25KW continuous, 50KW surge).

At the time, I didn't want to bring it on-line, and simply shut down the farm as the storm was short lived in my area.
It appears the server rig hung up during its shutdown, and just plain wouldn't respond. I ultimately did a hard power down. I think the HDD was killed by the heads not being parked when I killed the power. . . . . . Bummer.

    . . . . . he he, yeah, I got the power thing covered barring God's fury.

    1) A good PSU should enable a harddrive to 'park'; it should hold up power long enough for the drive to do what it has to do at power-down !
I wouldn't point at the HDD as the 1st possible culprit ...

    2) A mains surge arrester can deflect more 'Joules' and can handle higher voltages than any UPS and/or pluggable surge arrester ever can.
That 's the 1st line of defense ...

Seems to be a good'n and its from APC, a worldwide known maker.

We installed APC UPS's in the whole of The Netherlands and part of Belgium for the VEDIOR group (Interim Job thingy) ... [ 1 with next to every local server ]

    small correction;

I live in Belgium; we are located under the Dutch (the Netherlands), to the west of Germany and to the north of France.
We have a coastline accros from the English channel (north of 'the Channel' in fact) so we have to our west, the English who live in the southern 2/3's of the main island of Great Britain ...
We speak sort-of the same language as the Dutch; you see that as f.e. the US citizens of Connecticut versus the ones of Texas (strong difference in dialect) !

We understand eachother (most of the time), but there are certain big differences.

    that 's it !
