    Finally, I'm gettin ready to reinstall everything, the bios is flashed to 1007 and I'm ready to reformat and start fresh. Just want to know wether the driver upgrades (4in1 4.28 and the build 25) should or can be installed during the whole process, should be done before or can simply be done after. Do I need to unistall the old ones first? I can find links galore on getting these upgrades but can't find a simple link on installing them. The book just talks about the CD default drivers. I'm also finding contradictory advice on wether to install the hard drive into the Primary IDE connection then switch it to the ATA 100 slot after installing the ATA1000 drivers, or, as some others suggest, it NEEDS to be in the ATA slot when I reformat or it won't be recognized when I switch it.

    Talking As long as.....

    You follow the guide, just use the 4.28 offical VIA drivers, Fdisk and install the OS directly on the ATA100 conroller.

    Use build 25 of the promise drivers.

    follow the guide now.. each step

    Hi Kit

    First, could you double check the multiplier settings for me please. What you gave me pretty much matches the settings I expected for the Athlon 750 or the duron 700, but the multiplier settings you gave me are the exact opposite. Below are the ones you gave me. The book however, has the multipliers as down, down, up, down, down, up (ie: on, on, off. on, on, off). Is this just a transposition error? The FSB settings match up, that is, all down (ie: all on)
    Jen = 1-2

    Vcore:
    VID4 = 1-2
    VID3 = 2-3
    VID2 = 1-2
    VID1 = 1-2

    FSB:
    all 4 down (as you look at the board standing in the tower)

    Multiplier: 750mhz
    (as you look at the board standing in the tower)
    1 = up
    2 = down
    3 = down
    4 = up
    5 = down
    6 = down

    Talking Hmmmm...

    What I posted is correct..

    If you look in your tower as it stands, the switch bank should be numbered:

    6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

    What I posted above, sets to the corrisponding switch number
    1= 1
    2= 2
    3= 3 etc...

    If you are reading left to right, then it would be backwards.

    Reading left to right... what are the odds! Lol!
    Thanks Kit.

    OK, I'm ready to shoot the Asus people. Near as I can figure at this point is that they never expected anyone to actually need all 5 PCI slots.

    I can't put anything in the 2nd slot cause it'll interfere with the ATA 100 controller, and even if I got an AGP video card to free up a slot taken at the moment by my PCI video card, it turns out that the AGP slot shares an IRQ with the 1st PCI slot. Gimme a break here. Is there any configuration of my 5 cards that will work sharing an IRQ with either the ATA 100 (slot 2) or if I got an AGP video card, which is the best bet to run in slot 1 along side the AGP video so as to keep slot 2 open.
    Again, my 5 cards:
    video: diamond monster fusion
    sound:ensonique
    ethernet card for cable modem
    standard motorola phone modem (used for fax only)
    Adaptec SCSI controller card

    Just load the OS with the video card and nothing else in the system.

    yes, an AGP card would be better however your PCI video must be in slot 1 (just below the agp)

    Once you install the 4 in 1 drivers, then install your cards one by one leaving the sound card and the video drivers for last.

    Do not install the promise drivers and shut down the promise system in the BIOS along with virus protection and the onboard sound / modem

    As you go, I would first put the SCSI in slot 4, the NIC in slot 5 and modem in slot 2 and the sound in 3.

    Install them one at a time and make sure everything works before you continue to the next.
