    Recommend me a router!

My number one concern is the hardware firewall. I've had several attacks on my machine (one successful ) and my software-based wall just ain't cutting it. I need to be able to attach 2 computers, an -XBOX, and a Playstation2, and if it'll allow future expansion, all the better. This will be my first foray into networking/routers, so toss me a bone I'm using a VERY quick cable broadband if that matters, and I do NOT want wireless (lots of interference in this area). Also, I don't mind spending money for something good, but I don't want to just throw it away.

    Thanks, Aaron

... and in all of them, my answer has been the same... Linksys BEFSR41.

I have had a Siemens for a year now, it works well, fast, easy setup, and has a printer port for print sharing. I paid $60 for it at Circuit City.

If you want a hardware firewall with SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) etc. you might take a look on Linksys BEFSX41 or a Netgear with SPI firewall etc.
Lots of routers come with a NAT (Network Address Translation) firewall, but fewer also got the SPI firewall.

    Linksys BEFSX41:

    Netgear FR114P:

The Netgear printserver gives a little problems with some old printers.

So you have to decide if you want one with SPI+NAT or one with NAT.

Question Re: Recommend me a router!

Huge bump! I bumped this old thread because my choice has come down to these two routers also.

My D-Link DI-704P is dying on me. I've had it for about 1 1/2 years and about 8 months ago it started dropping the Internet every so often without one drop the first 10 months of use. It really hasn't gotten so worse that I needed another one until tonight. Seems to drop about every 10 minutes or so. It's time to get a new one and I'm staying away from D-Link. I've narrowed the search down to two routers:

    Linksys BEFSX41
    NetGear FR114P

I have two computers hooked up to a router and will probably need a 3rd in a couple years. I am on the Internet at forums a lot and game online from time to time. Which one of these would be my best solution? Hope I can post this before the D-Link cuts out on me. Thank you.

You did well IMHO, I have used linksys for sometime now and have been a happy camper. Just make sure the firmware is upto date when you install the router to the network, can do this via router interface. This will add some new features and fix any problems is any were present. I also like the user interface when setting the router up, to me it's one of the better ones out.

Good luck and post back on how you like it!!!!!!

    Take care,

    Re: Recommend me a router!

I've heard to stick with the 1.45.7 firmware for the greatest stability. Is this true?
