    Question Motherboard/RAM Compatibility Help

    Hey guys,

Was wondering what the best brand/type of ram to get with this ASUS board
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=13-131-436

It's my first time ever building a computer so I'd like to get through it the least amount of compatibility issues possible

That link you posted requires you to copy it and paste it into the browser bar if anyone asks.

Ah, the A7N8X. Good mobo, guy. Mushkin Level II black PC3500 RAM. Mushkin lists your motherboard as a compatible product. You can see for yourself at www.mushkin.com under DDR Mainboard Qualification. These are said to be of the Winbond chip variety utilizing the bh-5 stepping. Good RAM.

Furthermore, I would invest in a 2X512mb set of RAM for 1024mb (1gig) total. If you get just 512mb, you may find yourself wanting more. The mill has it that 1gig is optimal for Windows XP, but that 64bit windows may have 1gig to be minimum. Investing in RAM is important so you don't have RAM you can't use. Some combinations like 1X512 + 2x256mb modules aren't allowed. So, basically, if you want to get 1gig of RAM, your 2x256 are useless. Plus, if you buy RAM that is slow then you want to add faster RAM, it will only run as fast as the slowest RAM if you combine the two. That's just how motherboards work, and can't be helped by any RAM designer.

    thanks for the help guys

i was actually looking into getting the Corsair XMS Extreme Serires with Twin 512 DDR 3200 sticks for about 233 dollars. (US)

It's the same mobo/ram set that alienware uses.

    good choice??

Not necessarily. It's probably decent RAM, but you will probably get a few more FSB with the Mushkin PC3500 when overclocking. You might not get much overclock at all, if any from that model of XMS. Alienware isn't bad stuff, it's just not a template to go by purchasing components. Nothing is.

yea i didnt mean it was a template to follow, just meant that they had that ram on that mobo so i imagined it was a decent match up ram/mobo wise.

i dont think ill be doin much overclocking either.
ive never had a decent machine to game with, always extremely subpar systems, 18fps kind of thing if i was lucky.

so ill be spoiled with whatever i get.

LOL, right, I'm sorry for my "tone". I mean to say that RAM is actually an important investment considering most decent manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty. You will most likely change your mind about overclocking since you really can't hurt anything using an Nforce2 board. PCI/AGP is locked, so overclocking does alot less damage to HDD data these days. Not only that, you will want something that performs well in the future, too. What you got your eye on is fine RAM, I was just considering other things...There is supposedly a Corsair RAM that uses the same chips as the Mushkin model I posted earlier. I really don't know how to decipher that one, though...seems to be like chasing a rabbit. Winbond BH-5. Bet you could get some good answers in the memroy forum. thus, there I have moved this thread.
