I was reading that earlier this morning and wondered if it would make a topic of debate.
The one for $499 is different than this for a couple of reasons

It's not running MS products and it's via. I saw it on the China news service.

It's cheap and it's Walmart getting into consumer electronics like only they can.

I wonder what it'll do to the future of consumer electronics. Lower margins mean less advancements usually. But competition causes change. But with less margins there is less competition.

Sooner or later, a lot of people start to figure out that a lot of what Walmart sells is....crap, for lack of a better term.
For example, my wife bought a cheap dust-pan there, that unfortunately had a big bow in it. Was great for sweeping dust under the dust-pan, but not exactly what I had in mind.

They've got some great products, and some of the deals they have can't be beat. Unless, ofcourse, you have a conscience when it comes to the type of business you want your dollars to support. Generally, I spend a little more to deal with local and trusted merchants. I'd never buy beef at Walmart, nor electronics. But the deals on Breyer's ice cream? OK, I can't pass that up!

I honestly can count on one finger the times I've been inside Wally World. I just couldn't stand the closeness of the isles and quality??? Wally World never tries to market quality. They market price.
Frontline had a great piece on their buying practices a few weeks ago. Wally World has singlehandedly changed the retail world from a supply dominated world to a buyer dominated business. They tell manufacturers what to make and how much they will sell it for. That's the kind of power they have amassed.
Me? I refuse to be a part of it and I LOVE Dryers ice cream. I frankly don't care if they are giving it away. Once in there was enough for me.

Well... WalMart didn't do it SINGLEhandedly... ask anybody who has to try to sell to Costco what kind of an impact THEY have on businesses!

In the end the consumer gets screwed.

Home Depot is another retail corporate conglomerate that has essentially put the "Mom and Pop" hardware stores and home improvement / building materials shops out of business.

And now we have the selection of what Home Depot carries - which is many times crap and more often than not, they don't have what one is looking for.

For instance: Actual hardware, fasteners, small brass pipe fittings, aluminum stock, etc. Their selection is VERY limited.

They've screwed the retail market into "Blister Pack" garbage. Much the same has also happened in the automotive parts industry.

Parts and customer support at Home Depot is limited to exchanges in most cases. Buy a product and try for a throttle cable on a 3 year old lawnmower - not to be found. Home Depot used to carry good quality Rubbermaid gas cans and replacement nozzles for them. Now they carry another cheaper brand with no replacement nozzles available.

They are turning us more and more into a "Throw Away" and Recycle -vs- "Repair and re-use" society.
