Ya.. it is a tough call. I just remember as I was growing up here in the SF Bay Area.. most teachers I had took every opportunity to make their case about how bad they had it. It just wore thin as hell on me by the time I hit the JC level. The only upside was the free time afforded every time the union got them stirred up and they picketed the schools.
In some fields I do not mind instructors with no "real world" experience.. but in the vast majority I think it is critical. As an aircraft maintainer in the USAF we had plenty of people with the "book smarts" to do the job that you would not let under the cowl of a jet aircraft for any amount of beer. They usually ended up in the tool shed or behind a desk somewhere. These same people had no issue picking up their FAA A&P licenses. I knew a lot of the folks testing when I got mine back in 92 were in the "book smart" category...
While it is not necessary... I sure have seen, and had the direct benefit from the experience of those whom actually did what they taught on a professional level. So yes.. it is a tough call.

Besides, it's not like Ms Crow is the only one benefiting from all of those polluting vehicles... look how many of the little people get to hear her sing? Isn't that an offset?!?
You should learn to be more tolerant 'nStuff.
