More on the economy "reporting"..
The US Unemployment Rate
January 1948 to November 2007
Dan Blather 1996 Re: Bubba administration
Contrast that to Jims CNN hysterics above and the "story" tells itself.Rather went to even greater lengths to de-emphasize the negative on his June 7, 1996 broadcast. “The government came out today with its latest report on unemployment. It says the unemployment rate rose slightly, 2/10ths of a point last month, up to 5.6 percent – still low overall.
Keep moving... nothing to see here..

It's the same bull$hit they pump about any aspect of the economy - words like soaring, spiraling, collapsing, plummeting, etc.....
EXAMPLE: New housing starts plummeted in 2007 another 5.3% to the slowest since 2004 - well, in 2-04 they were up 25% over 2000 so where does that leave us?
I just pulled the numbers above out of myass for an example - to make a point.
We see this crap every day in the media - every friggin' day.
Ya know, the beauty of it all is that the average Joe/Jane isn't as stupid as they think - Hillary is getting here a$$ kicked!!!!! Kerry lost.

Been reading about how Republicans went from being hated in the south to being loved...
From Wikipedia's own Affirmative action articleThe ad played upon white voters' fears that affirmative action policies might prevent them from getting a job that would go to a "less-qualified" black person
Yes, can't imagine why someone would be afraid a system that gives "preferential treatment...to applicaticants from socio-politically disadvantaged groups" might cause those "racist" whites to fear they might be turned down for a job because of the color of their skin. This is commonly achieved through targeted recruitment programs, by preferential treatment given to applicants from socio-politically disadvantaged groups and in some cases through the use of quotas.
To be fair, minorities are still minorities so the odds are pretty damn unlikely.
^^^^ Yup... us "racist" crackers seem to be able to see that...
Affirmative action = reverse discrimination.

Proclamation of Amnesty and Pardon Granted to
All Persons of European Descent
Proclamation of Amnesty and Pardon Granted to
All Persons of European Descent
Whereas, Europeans kept my forebears in bondage some three centuries toiling without pay,
Whereas, Europeans ignored the human rights pledges of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution,
Whereas, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments meant little more than empty words,
Therefore, Americans of European ancestry are guilty of great crimes against my ancestors and their progeny.
But, in the recognition Europeans themselves have been victims of various and sundry human rights violations to wit: the Norman Conquest, the Irish Potato Famine, Decline of the Hapsburg Dynasty, Napoleonic and Czarist adventurism, and gratuitous insults and speculations about the intelligence of Europeans of Polish descent,
I, Walter E. Williams, do declare full and general amnesty and pardon to all persons of European ancestry, for both their own grievances, and those of their forebears, against my people.
Therefore, from this day forward Americans of European ancestry can stand straight and proud knowing they are without guilt and thus obliged not to act like damn fools in their relationships with Americans of African ancestry.

I call it reverse discrimination because it does to the majority what it claims to be defending the minority from. You are correct.. it's discrimination any way you dice it.
I saw no such conditions in the pardon. Better get in before Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson get wind of it.![]()

Computer Bleg [Mark Hemingway]
I need some technical advice regarding computer repairs — I'll spare everyone the details, but if you're a computer geek or an IT pro and are feeling merciful, please read on.
My box is an AMD dual processor with 2 GBs of RAM and and two 300GB hard drives. It's a few years old and has seen heavy use. It was left on for a couple of days and now it won't boot, instead it gives me the following error:IDE Channel 1 no 80 Conductor cableAny idea what exactly the problem might be (bad cable?) and/or the best way to fix this in the DC metro area? Thanks for your charity... you can click on my name above to find my email.

If there's any actual slaves still alive (and no, slave and "southern black person" are not synonyms) I'll sign the thing myself.Governor Perdue has recently expressed reluctance about Georgia issuing a formal apology for its role in slavery
^^That guy from National Review. Bad Floppy is my guess. Then maybe the cable.
But one thing I know: A bad Floppy can basically screw a system.

Padilla v. Yoo: Via How Appealing comes news that Jose Padilla is suing John Yoo. A press release announcing the suit declares:
John Yoo, the author of legal memos that gave the go-ahead for government agents to use torture against terrorism suspects, was sued this morning in federal court in San Francisco. The lawsuit was brought by Jose Padilla, an American citizen seized from a civilian setting and interrogated for years in a military prison, and his mother, Estela Lebron. The lawsuit claims that Yoo, then a senior lawyer in the Justice Department, purported to provide legal justifications for torture. This is the first lawsuit against Yoo seeking to hold him accountable for the suffering unleashed by his 'Torture Memos.' Yoo's memos justified and set in motion the use of harsh and illegal interrogation methods not only abroad -- in places like Guantanamo Bay and the secret CIA 'black sites,' -- but also here in the United States. The Chicago Tribune provides this additional background on the suit, and How Appealing has posted the complaint here. The complaint only seeks nominal damages and a declaration that Yoo authorized illegal and/or unconstitutional detention policies. Even so, I would be surprised were this suit to get all that far.
