Encore Internal Modems... Good? Bad?

A co-worker is looking for a new internal modem. Doing a New Egg search popped up with several very inexpensive Encore Modems (see link below). Since Tigs and I have been on Cable for over 5 years now, I'm totally clueless about modems these days.

Anyone know anything about Encore? Are they any good?

This one at newegg is a good buy and works well on a clean phone line. Installed several without any problems.

If it were me, I'd spend the extra 20 bucks and buy a us robotics one. They are pretty much the only brand of modem I will buy. Oh yea, there is the oem version at newegg too, that one is only 13 bucks and its the best brand internal modem you can buy, kind of a no brainer. But other than that pretty much any cheapo winmodem will do, except if they run linux, then go for an external one.

Beware with internal modems and the ECS K7S5A mainboard. Many don't work properly.

I'd always go for external modems but that's just me being stubborn and old-tech.

I've installed several of these and have found them to far outperform anything with an Intel chipset.

I kinda get the feeling that generic modems and NICs are very, very fragile and sometimes just do whatever they feel like. At least, that's my own experience. As for encore? Eh, you never know...it's just like anything else...you order a good one or you order a bad one. Luck of the draw. I would buy one from a physical store if that's all you're getting. Real easy to return.
