    wow, nice burst speed!

and yes, it is possible as a 2x native sata controller has 300MB/s of available bandwidth...each sata channel is independent.

    Grinch, got some questions.

1- How come you don't have the OS on the two raided Raptors? I would think you would want to take advantage of the tremendous speed. You can make an image to protect the data and store it on either the 3rd Raptor or WD for rapid restoration. I had my rig set up like yours except I am using pata drives but when I got the adapters and created a raid 0 using the sata raid 8237 solution, my performance shot through the roof. You really are wasting the speed by keeping the OS on a single Raptor.

2-What is with the slow speed on the single Raptor on the promise controller? My Maxtor pata drive gets comparable or better scores which would lead me to believe that switching things around to the way I suggest in the first point makes even more sense.

I am sure that is true....But I have a tendency to break and rebuild my raid array alot right now. I am still tinkering around with a few things right now and I will keep you all posted with my findings.

That's a better reason to make an image and store it for rapid restoration. If you want to test the differences between stripes and clusters, all you have to do is restore an image stored on one of the other hdds. What about the 3rd Raptor? I see you did some cpu fix but why is it so slow?

before when I ouwld run HDTach it would say my burst rate was like 1500mbps (NO WAY) and my cpu utilization was like 45%..after installing a microsoft patch it brought it back down to earth.

Yes, you were correct. It is indeed true. I'm satisfied with that based on what I'm seeing here on two completely different systems.

    That burst speed is incorrect...

HD tach is really looking weird with that one raptor and the promise controller.

Well, at least all you numbers match up on Atto
Still, your reads should be faster than that since I recall someone posting an Atto pic of a single raptor and the reads were in the high 50's. I still think you should use the single raptor for storage and make a raid 0 array your OS drive. Try that next and post a pic. BTW, use HDtach 2.61 if you must use one of their tests. The 2.70 is a joke.
