    Question Nvidia vs ATI

    Hi there,

I do not want to start too much of a debate but I was wondering if people could give me their opinion of a couple of cards.

The card I presently own is a GF3 Ti200 /w 128 on it and unfortunately it's really giving me problems with EA games so I am considering purchasing a new card.

If you guys could give me your $0.02 on what card you like better out of the following:

    My persent GF3 Ti200
    ATI Radeon 9200 /w 128
    GF4 Ti4200 /w 128

Also instead of just saying which you prefer if you could be detailed as that would be greatly appreciated.

    RGDS & TIA

the 4200 is the best out of what you listed. but to be honest with you its not worth it to upgrade to one of those cards. if you can't afford a dx 9 card like the 9600 pro i suggest you wait and save. the 4200 just isn't gonna make that big of a difference. what problems are you having with ea games? problems specific to certain games don't warrant an upgrade, more likely you need updated drivers or something else. the card you have is fine until you can afford a good dx 9 card.

modru2004 is right: Neither Radeon9200 or the Ti4200 offers any significant improvement over your existing Gf3. Speedwise the Ti4200 is somewhat ahead, technology wise the Radeon9200 has a minor advantage (dx8.1 with PS1.4 support, not really all that important), but unfortunately the Radeon9200 is really not even a match (speed/frame rate wise) to your Gf3 in most cases. Wait till you have the money to do a real upgrade.

Tom's Hardware did a fairly comprehensive review of just about all of the major current market video cards. It's a little long, but well worth the read. What I'd recommend is figure out what your price range is, do some looking to see what you can afford, then have 3 or 4 cards in mind as you look through this review. You'll see how they each stack up against each other in different games etc. Also, my rule of thumb is that if you wait long enough, and look consistently (ie, try newegg, ebay, the trading forums, and anywhere else you know of) you'll be able to find the card (or anything else) you want for a reasonable price. Newegg refurbished section has some good deals, if you wait for them and look often.

The Tom's Hardware review is here. Good luck.

9600xt will beat those cards and I've seen it for around $150
    ( after rebates of course....)

allergic to ATI? Try an Nvidia 5700 and call me in the morning....

guys lets not turn this into a fanboyism war. obviously the guy isn't biased to either side right now otherwise he wouldn't have chosen cards from both sides to express interest in. lets keep it that way.

Well my only thought is that a Geforce 4 TI 4200 will indeed show marked improvement in games over a 3 ti 200. However that’s not saying I recommend buying a TI 4200 at this time.

I think you can find an ATI 9600 non pro or pro for a decent price, also I have seen 5600 Ultras (Including the one in my rig) selling for between 118.00 to 130.00 dollars in retail package.

A bump up would be the ATI 9600 XT or Geforce 5700 and 5700 Ultra. But by the time you get to the 5700 Ultra you can find a 5900 NU for almost the same.

I really think you should be looking at ATI 9600 or 9600 Pro based on a moderate to low budget card that also has good performance. Kick up your expectations a notch and you open up a new can of worms.

Any SE cards are slow. I'd look at a 9600 Pro.

Exactly and think about it he’s upgrading from a 3 Ti 200. That should be the card you would want to measure the performance against. Is the 9600se a good upgrade from a 3 Ti 200 ? THAT’S the question

That is definitely the question, but in this case the answer is a definite: No.
