wanna move from WD to ??? Help.

I currently have an PATA 120g WD cavier 8mb cache drive that just yesterday started to "make noticible noise" where i couldent even tell if it was operating before. This is my second drive of equal size/performance that i have sent back to WD for repair or replacement. I have a second identicle drive that has been trouble free for almost 3 years

What i want to know is should i replace this damn drive again or is there something much better out there (size can be bigger then 120g but i do like the 8mb cache) that can perform as well or better then WD. Also ROCK SOLID STABILITY is a must.

I guess the one thing i really liked about the WD is the return policy. Get a brand new drive first, then send back the bad one, which is how i replaced the previous drive.

Dont get me wrong. WHEN my WD is working the way it should i have been extremely happy with it, im just thinking maybe its time to move on to another brand/make/model.

I guess im looking for a general concensus on which is the top performing PATA drive next to WD, taking into consideration performance/reliability.

    Thnx guys...........$$

    Aside from WD...

    Performance: Maxtor
    Reliability: Seagate

    IMHO of course.

Yea man, CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS!!!

*sigh* Well now im really walking the fence here...

I suppose if i dove right in to SATA what would the recommendations be, as i hear seagate SATA's suck (or maybe it was just the one bad review of the barracuda V) and after this new mishap with WD i really dont want to go that direction again.

I guess on the other hand i could grab another 120G 8mb drive from seagate (have heard that there PATA's are fairly solid) to replace this wounded WD until im more ready to switch to SATA.... uggg godammit!!!!

I really really cant believe this is happening to me RIGHT NOW, i have some serious planning to do.

    Lookin on Newegg:

If you went WD the WD1200JB is $97 and the SATA version WD1200JD is $109. It is getting closer and closer....getting tempted yet...lol.

Are you looking to go with 120GB again or something bigger?

For SATA, WD's Raptor has no peers. Hitachi's 7K250 would be next best, and the rest under that.

Thnx BWM, the raptor do look speedy but i need way more space then what the raptor has to offer. Besides im not all that confident in WD right at the moment.

"not yet".... Backup, that's all I can say. I used to think "oh, that never happned to me, I won't lose anything"... but, since then, it's happned like 4 times and I was sick to my stomach when it happned.

Whatever you decide, you should backup somehow (besides CD or DVD I'd say go with an external HD).

    Just thought I'd babble. lol

    lol dam double post.

Anyhow my plan was to maybe do 160gb or 200gb as pure storage. Then maybe scale back on the primary OS drive to like 80GB or 60gb from my 120gb. The only reason i got the 120gb WD was for my OS, because at the time it was the only drive i could find with 8mb cache.

Saw the Hitachi 160GB on sale at Newegg:

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...=BROWSE&depa=0

Do you feel that you need 60-80GB for the OS drive....and some app?

Ill just say that i have no problems with losing my data on this drive, only for the reason that basically my OS and drivers are located here. Reinstalling the OS and a few drivers, plus McAfee and Zonealarm, is a non issue. I store all my other program stuff on my second (reliable for now) drive.
