    Firefox .8

    A new name and a new version. A new release of Firebird has hit the Internet, v.8. Along with this new version is a new name as well, Firefox. Apparently there's a database that is already called Firebird so the name was changed to avoid confusion. I hope they finally stick with a name this time.

    The big things for this version:
    * Windows Installer

    Firefox now comes with an installer for Windows. Aside from making the installation process smoother, the installer also solves some common plug-in problems.
    * Download Manager

    The new streamlined download manager keeps your downloads organized without getting in your way. Select Tools > Downloads or press Ctrl+E to see it or change its behavior.
    * New Add Bookmark Dialog

    The Add Bookmark dialog has been enhanced and now allows the creation of new bookmark folders.
    * Work Offline

    It's now possible to view Web pages you've previously visited without being connected to the Internet.
    * Better Handling of File Types

    Binary files (e.g. .wma and .rar files) served by servers incorrectly sending text/plain should no longer be displayed as garbage in the browser, rather they should be appropriately handled.
    * New XPInstall Frontend

    The dialog that appears when installing themes and extensions has been redesigned and is easier to use.
    * New default theme for MacOS X

    The Pinstripe theme integrates better on MacOS X than the Qute theme, used on Windows and Linux.
    * Lots of bug fixes and improvements

    Disabling of form auto-completion is now working, the address bar now remembers the edited text across tab switching, among many other bug fixes.

    The download sites are kinda overloaded right now. I still haven't found a good mirror. If you still haven't tried this great browser you should. Firefox, even in it's pre-1.0 state, is what a browser is supposed to be.

    Firebird/Fox is my favorite browser, but WTH kind of name is "Firefox". Their logo is good, but firefox is a genuinely sh*tty name. It doesn't sound quite right as a word, the two syllables both beginning with Fs tend to break the word up, making it harder to say.

    Had some problems installing it (didn't like the extentions I had I guess, had to install and uninstall 3 or 4 times to realize the problem) but starting anew (deleting all, including profile) got things back to normal. Things seem to be working well now, though I don't notice much different from .7 to .8. Guess I will have to work with it more to see. Not that this is a bad thing, I have been using Firebird exclusively for quite some time now and like it quite a bit.

    I'll be honest with you guys.. and I can't believe I'm saying this myself.


    I can't notice a difference in speed between this and Internet Explorer.

    Maybe it's just me? Or maybe I heavily tweaked IE so long ago that I forgot about it.

    do your have a really fast connection? If so you wouldn't really notice a difference going from page to page. One way to test it would be to clear your cache from both browser and load a page that is complicated.

    I like Phoenix/Firebird/Firefox so much now that I've completely uninstalled IE from my machine with XPlite. I'm free!

    I have been using Firebird before the Firefox release. It roxors and is my default browser though Firebird was also. Competition is good. Right now Mozilla has a much more superior product.

    The name was changed because it conflicted with the name of another open source project.

    I have myie2 which is a good browser. Is there a big difference between myie2 and firefox and should I switch. It sounds tempting.

    I think you'll find firefox to be faster. Try it, its free. If you don't like it don't use it.

    To each his own, but no tabs and pop-ups all the time got real annoying over a year ago and I said bye bye to IE. And firefox has useful extensions/plugins.

    I don't think you can turn of the manager.
