About to disect a Sony Vaio...

Anybody here who has any experience in servicing Vaio laptops?

    This one is a PGG-F801A,
    533 MHz AMD K6-2+ w/128 MB SDRAM, 12,1" SVGA.

My aim is to quiet the fan, it seems that its seen its better days and its noisy enough that I cant use it for longer periods than 5 minutes...

I have been working on a similar case myself with a 800mhz K6.

With a real quick look at the vaio case it did not look easy but I have not had enough time to really look at the laptop.

The user can run anywhere from 15-30 minutes but then it hard locks. After troubleshooting everything else my bet is on heat.

well I got in alright, kudos to Sony for not using any weird Torx or similar
The fan is what I would guess 30 mm, dont have any equipment to measure with... Anyways its a Sunon which only seems to be available at some british printervendor as a spare for printers and they want 30 for it.

Tried cleaning it, same horrible soundlevels. So I yanked it out, well see how it will work without it. Experience from desktops says the system will crash before sustaining damage Since Sony didnt even bother to put thermal paste on the CPU I guess this chip isnt a P4EE in disguise heat-wise

Maybe a 40 mm low-noise fan will fit if I can cut away the frame and glue it in...

I ran it for a week without the fan and it seemed to work just fine. but as im going to sell it I put in an old 40 m fan.. After cutting of the frame and epoxy-glueing it on since there was no f***ing way to buy an original replacement fan with the weird Y-shape fastening, it now works just as well and its still dead quiet. I think the quiet part is probably because the fan I put in is a 12 V as opposed to the the originals 5 V. Probably the airflow is less than 50% of the old fan but it doesnt seem to get hot enough to cause trouble.

My only problem now is what to do with the 2 leftover screws.... I have checked and checked again and I cant for my life figure out where they are supposed to go...
