    Flaky Maxtor SATA raid

I have two 120's in raid 0 been running fine for months now since last week I keep getting random lock ups in windows and have to reboot (never had to ever do that before been rock solid stable) now when It reboots it checks the HDD and finds errors then fix's them etc. then she will work for a while then boom same thing I cant Defrag or it will lock up so anything that really tax's the HDD its frozen. do you think I might have a bad disk/virus/other wise? I use etrust anti-virus. I guess I need to download the Maxtor max blast and have a run.... any ideas things to try? oh and they have a 80mm fan on each of em so cooling shouldnt be a problem. I have a MSI k7n2g-ILSR mobo.

A virus is possible but doubtful if you keep defs current. You could always get a second opinion by doing an online scan.

You said it was running great before...have you installed any new components lately? Also have you cleaned the inside of your case. Dust bunnies can get in the fins of the heatsink pretty fast...also any reduction in quality of power or a possible bad stick of RAM.

You need to run the Powermax Diagnostics page but I'm not sure it'll work on an nVidia based board. Go ahead and try that next. Hit the middle link in my siggy or the stickey near the top of the threads list.

looks like I got the problem fixed it seams one of my cooling fans on my HDD has frozen up so i replaced it and she is running fine but I dont think these w/ out direct cooling should lock up but I guess they do weird.

Were the cooling fans on the same power line as the hard drive?

Most drives have a 50-55C upper limit in their specs so temperature shouldn't be causing a lockup in your case, and I'd get rid of it if it is.

I think your clue is that the scandisk says it is fixing errors, when i received this error, one of my drives was developing bad sectors, so I had to rebuild the array with a new set of drives. Set the scandisk to do a thorough(surface) scan when windows retstarts and watch the results of the scan to see if it finds bad sectors.
