Either Centrino or the new AMD mobiles are good choices. AMD is not new to the laptop market at all, but yes at one point in time they did have some heat problems. The name centrino is just a complete name for the new P4 mobile and the chipset including the onboard wireless. So really you should just go with whatever you feel is the best purchased. I don't really know what is available in New Zealand, but the laptop you have linked looks exactly like the new compaq R3000 series which is a very nice laptop.

I'd stay away from QMB for after sales service tho..

Had extremely poor service for stuff I bought off them. Yes they are one of the cheapest retailers around in Auckland but they are terrible for service.

    Cheers.

    Edit: try this: http://www.nfc.co.nz/NotebookBrand.asp?Brand=Asus

    or www.edencomputers.co.nz

    Good luck.

Re: ??INTEL(Mobile M/Centrino OR AMD Mobile CPU???

I agree go with what ever offers the best bang for your buck. I bought a pretty full featured AMD based compaq a few years ago for just over 850 dollars and I'm very happy with it. I don't really have any heat problems and my only complaint would be the slow ass harddrive they put in this. I'll be upgrading to one of the seagate momentus drives that are pretty fast yet sip on the power so it won't chew thru my batteries very fast. Also I'm not sure if this works for the centrino but there is this nifty little proggie http://www.cpuheat.wz.cz/main.htm that will allow you to specify voltage and multiplier. I can undervolt my mobile AMD chip to .925V from the standard 1.2V to save some battery life. Also if your laptop doesn't come with a program to specify which power state it uses do a google for "speedswitch XP" another useful app.
