Question Positive Experiences w. New AMD64 Driver?

I was just wondering if there was anyone who was really glad, or slightly pleased with their computer's performance after installing the driver. I read some negatives, but others said they had no problems- and I was wondering if "no problems" possibly included a mindblowing performance improvement (one can dream) or no improvement - What's good?

I have no problems with it other than the fact that ClockGen doesn't work and I notice no performance improvements.

Re: Positive Experiences w. New AMD64 Driver?

My clockgen doesn't work with this board (no clocks section) and I emailed the guy who makes it and he emailed me this:
    "Hello,
I already had some return on the K8V version. It seems the K8V support depends on the BIOS version.
However, I personally have this board, and it works fine (I have BIOS 1005).
I keep looking at the problem, but I have no solution yet, sorry.
    Thanks, and best regards,
    Franck"
So it may have nothing to do with the driver, 'cause I don't have it installed yet. I think he's right about the BIOS though, it's probably the culprit- I haven't checked back at his site to see if there's a new version yet.

I've downloaded the driver but have been afraid to install it because of reported problems. For the few that tried the driver and found no problems, I have yet to hear anyone report that it does anything noticable! Someone guessed that it implements "cool and quiet" for the 64 bit WinXp. No one seems to have a a clue as to why you would want to install it and what it actually does.

It is for enabling cool and quiet, probably adjust what is considered a "load" on the cpu, how many times per second it can make speed/voltage adjustments, and just some genreal cool and quiet optimizations. I don't see what the big mystery is.

Well, I guess the question is, why enable "cool and quiet" when it is already enabled for WinXP 32 bit. Does this enable it for WinXP 64 bit?

Ok, I installed the drivers and see NO difference!

    It's a 32-bit driver. You can't use 32-bit drivers in windows XP 64-bit.

Re: Positive Experiences w. New AMD64 Driver?

Well, I guess I,m imagining things, but "cool and quiet" works fine in XP32 bit but does not work at all in 64 bit WinXP! Not only that, I tried to install the new driver under WinXP 64 bit and it tells me I don't have the proper OS for this! I tried to use the inf install but who knows what it actually did?

Re: Positive Experiences w. New AMD64 Driver?

"Cool and quiet" adjusts your system to automatically take into account the load that you have it under at the time. No load and it will automatically turn down the voltage on the fans and cpu. Crank up the load and the voltage and heat will crank up. Contrary to one of the above posts, "cool and quiet" is apparently implemented with a 32 bit driver. Apparently, the new driver is supposed to implement this feature for 64 bit systems.

was scared when i read it messed some ppl's systems up but i've installed it and am currently running it with no problems whatsoever (incl clockgen). no noticeable difference however (probably under the hood stuff that we wouldn't notice performance wise anyway).

You'll only benefit from cool and quiet if you have a CG revision chip. Earlier revisions don't have cool and quiet support.

Re: Positive Experiences w. New AMD64 Driver?

that's entirely incorrect. C0 steppings do in fact have CnQ - albeit different LDT stops and voltages. most ppl with C0 cpus haven't been able to use CnQ because save for Asus K8V and MSI K8T Neo, none of the other manufacturers initial mobos supported CnQ (maybe 1 or 2 other boards). later board releases/revisions/bios did in fact begin to utilize CnQ with C0 steppings. there have been 3 different AMD cpu drivers since A64 launched and each one has been released due to added CnQ support - first was for the the initial batch of C0 steppings, next for CG chips, and finally now, to accomodate DTR, mobile, C0, CG, et al.

Well, cool and quiet has always worked for me under WinXP 32 bit. I actually ask if this new driver had an effect on "cool and quiet" on the 64 bit XP version, but know one answered cool and quiet. Furthermore, the new driver seems to have NO effect.
