i just purchased a geforce fx 5500 oc. i installed the drivers from the cd, and everything seemed to be okay. but when i tried to run counterstrike with opengl at 800x600 res, the card didnt perform well at all. the framerate would jump from 60 to 30 at any given time, and sometimes down to 10. also, when i try to aim my crosshair practically jumps across the screen, its jerky. then i uninstalled the card and downloaded new drivers, same result. im out of ideas. anyone have any suggestions?
i am using an asus motherboard with the agp at 4x. and no, thats not while networking, thats just with bots. im not sure what you mean by chipset drivers, but i went to the BFG website and got the most recent nvidia drivers. and thx for the welcome
On the ASUS Site there should be some drivers for your motherboard. These aren't the newest drivers, so the best idea is to find out what type of chipset you have (it should have it in the motherboard book) and visit the chipset manufacturer's website.
These are very important for performance and should be installed before other devices like graphics and sound.
If you like, you can tell us what type of motherboard you have and we can show you where to get the right drivers.
Notice on the menu that there is a Download button? In there you will see a tab that says Drivers. Under that tab is all of the drivers that your motherboard requires. Chipset, USB, sound, etc. Some of these have since been updated, but ASUS hasn't added the new files to their site. Most motherboard manufacturers have trouble keeping up
Anyway, here's some info on the chipset and how to get the latest drivers:
Back on first page, you'll notice a section that says Chipset and has these details listed: VIA VT8751 (P4M266A) VIA VT8235
The "Northbridge" chipset (VT8751) is the main one. It essentially provides communication between the CPU, the RAM, the graphics and then to the rest of the computer via the "Southbridge" chipset (VT8235). So you can probably see now how this becomes very important to the operation of the rest of the PC.
Drivers:
Your chipset uses the "VIA 4in1" driver package which can be accessed from www.viaarena.com and then clicking on "Drivers" in the menu on the left. They are also referred to as "Hyperion" Drivers. VIA Arena can also be accessed by going to Technical Support in www.via.com.tw
I suggest that you remove the drivers for your graphics card, restart, then install the VIA 4in1, restart, and then reinstall the graphics drivers.
When you install Windows, the software should be "layered" in order of importance and permanency. Just something for you to consider, next time you install Windows
i uninstalled my card, installed the hyperion drivers, then reinstalled my card and still no change. i sent an email to bfg about my problem, so maybe theyll contact me. other than that ill just try a virus scan, because im out of ideas.
have you installed DirectX? If not, you can download it from the Microsoft site. Then try running CS using DirectX (D3D?) as opposed to OpenGL...
There are many updates for CS - I haven't touched that game for a loooong time, but I do recall having problems with some of the updates and having success with others. Have you updated the game? if so, what version are you running?
well i downloaded DirectX 9.0b and installed it. i tried running CS on OpenGL, same old sucky performance. then i tried running it on D3D and got a flat 15fps out of it. this is really starting to frustrate me. and by the way my CS version is 1.5
