I just put together my system and the cpu made a pop sound sooner after I hit the power button then I removed the heatsink and realized it had cracked and split apart.

    Here's my setup.

    Abit KT7A Raid Motherboard
Hercules 3D Prophet II 64Mb Video Card
    256Mb Crucial CAS2 PC133 Ram
    Swiftech MC462A Heatsink
    Tweakmonster Copper CPU spacer
    Delta Heatsink Fan
    Enermax 550/650W Power Supply
Small bit of Artic Silver Thermal Paste between the CPU core and Heatsink.
    AMD 1.33GHz CPU (AXIA)

I figure the CPU fried from the aroma and cracked, though I don't understand why. There was a bit of amber goo on the heatsink when I removed it. I even kept myself grounded the whole time while installing everything, something I rarely do. If anyone has any ideas what the problem could be let me know via this thread.
Sorry doesn't put thumbs back on hands Marge

    Question

Could it have been a Copper spacer induced DEATH??? If not it really sounds like the heatsink wasn't tight on the core. This saddens me more then you can ever know.

    Unhappy

Not good. Could be a bad heatsink clip, to much presure when aplying the HSF(most likely), power regulater not working and gave you 12volts to the chip, power supply surge, or a dozen other things. See if you can get the chip AND the motherboard replaced replaced. One or the other was probably the problem.

I would bet that the core craked when you put the HSF on and the heat from turning it on finished it off.

    Good luck replacing stuff...
