Which AMD 64 setup would be an upgrade?

Hi there. First let me start off by saying I have had AMD setups for years prior to this Intel setup, I have no preference, I just want performance.

That being said I am awaiting my X800 XT to arrive and am considering building a new machine around it, only however if it's going to be a significant boost over what I already have without blowing a load on an FX CPU. So if you would, please have a look at my specs(those that matter) and notice the overclock as that obviously has a big impact on gaming performance:

    Intel Pentium 4C HT 2.8@3.5Ghz (14x250) Watercooled
    Asus P4C800-E Deluxe 875
    1 GB OCZ Gold EL PC3700 (4x250) 1:1
    ATI Radeon 9800XT
    2X 120GB Western Digital 8MB Cache Raid0

Now my dilema with the A64 setup is I have 4 sticks of RAM, which makes the 754 chipset kind of useless to me. My main question is do you think a 939 and a 3500 would be a boost over what I have now? Would the performance increase be worth tearing my system apart, watercooling and all, for this AMD 64 rig? I'd like a 3800+ but I really do want to keep both of my kidneys. As it is I am going to wait on a few more 939 mobos to arrive before I decide on one, but I have been tempted to get an A64 for a while, with only my 4X256 of RAM holding me back.

I'd rather avoid doing anything if the performance increase would be marginal, but having never used an A64 I have no idea how mine compares.

Any former Intel users care to enlighten me?

Thanks for any help you all can offer.

The performance difference would definitely be there but to be honest I would wait. Your sys is good enough for now, let the prices drop before you spend your hard earned money

your current setup is more than fine currently...wait 3-6months before upgrading (especially if you're going to throw an x800XT in there).

I'd hold off upgrading. That system still kicks.

Wow, excellent. Thank you all for the honest replies. I really wasn't sure where I stood in terms of performance, so I will hold off and let the recent crop of A64's come down a bit. I'd like to see that 3800+ in the 400+ range (I'm sure I'm not alone there)

My bank account thanks you all.
